According to relatively modern sleep research, a night’s sleep for a person consists of repeated sleep cycles that last an hour and a half. It has been argued that the effectiveness of a night’s sleep depends on the number of completed sleep cycles and possibly the number of consecutive sleep cycles as well. If you make noise all night the attempt at sleep deprivation will be obvious and attract attention, possibly from the local police. If occasional, brief, loud noises occur during the night, timed, with an understanding of sleep cycles, you may be able to very substantially weaken a target with much less public attention or notice and without giving any grounds to contact local police. An example of such timing might be banging on a metal downpipe coming from the gutter at the same time intervals.
