$3-4 in change to some guy in Chicago last summer. As long as they're not agressive or drunk as hell I'll usually give them whatever change I have in my pockets.

When I was in my last year of highschool we went to london with our entire grade.

Somehow me and a few mates ended up sitting near some fountain or statue on Times Square. There was a bum sitting right next to us and as he heared us talk in dutch he joined the conversation. Turned out he was a dutch guy that fled The Netherlands when he was 18 because he killed his stephfather who molested him as a child.
After a while he asked if we had some spare change, I gave him £1...

After that he asked if he could spend the night in our hotel room, we kindly refused and walked away...

wow...what a trip...never know who a bum is huh? ;)

Aah you see.. instead of giving money, go into a food store, buy them some food or a hot drink and give them that. That way you know they aren't spending your money on drugs or booze :)

When me and the wife would buy KFC at a drive up window, we would get an extra order of potato wedges for the bum that woudl always be there asking for change.

When I worked in the city, on my lunch break, I would get an order of fries at McDonalds for the local bum.

Then I saw a special on TV where they went up to the bums that held up signs saying "will work for food" They would ask them to mow a lawn and they would pay them with a meal. 9 out of 10 refused the offer and walked away or asked for money instead.

That's why I will gladly give away food instead of money for their drug habbits.
