They talked about .xxx since 2000 and the reason it never went online is that it's impossible to demand all adult sites to be on .xxx domains - what about country domains etc...etc...
.com are here to stay my 5c |
I love the implied threat in the $60 price tag.
Why would any sane person pay 6 to 8 times the normal price for an .xxx domain? Only out of fear that the government will pass laws stealing the property of honest adult webmasters! There is no other reasonable explanation for such a high price, beyond fear-mongering and the threat of a religous policestate act of government theft. Of course, ICANN is just doing this to try to make some big profits off of webmaster fear. |

this is a joke...in many many aspects
Would like to know which parties are supporting this crap... |
First off - the people that will profit off of this is the company that started this whole campaign saying that they represented the adult industries interests and this was the "will" of the industry - in reality it was the will of a company that will sell the domains (not ICANN) that will profit from all of this.
Secondly - and most importantly - its all voluntary - no one will tell you you have to use a different domain tld - unless you let your congressmen vote a law into effect that would allow that - and then it would only affect US domain owners - of course the Canadian company that will make all of this profit from this approval is sitting back laughing that no representative of the real adult industry came forward and said - no this is not what we want during the public comment period. |
A buddy of mine told me that his friend campaigned really hard for .xxx for about 2 years now. I never took him seriously until today :(
|
To be honest I would probably get a xxx domain if one with my main link list domain was available just to have it in addition to all the type-ins variations that I already have for my LL.
|
Gunncat, thanks so much for emailing the ICANN guy. His reply is reassuring.
In terms of how much power the US gov has over domains... there's been discussion before that .com is governed by Georgia (I think?). I'm not sure if that will make a difference, as I think most people consider "dot-com" to be the universal, non-geographical domain. $60 is outrageous, but I'd rather pay the extortion money than miss out on a few vital domains... |
ICM I guess.
http://www.icmregistry.com/html/for_main_factsheet.html Sorry Linkster, but I will continue to think ICANN equally cheesey in this matter. I've never been particularly fond of ICANN in the past, and this does nothing to improve my opinion. Why the sudden interest on ICANN's part in approving new TLDs? Did we really need a .trav and an .xxx? |
Well, what I see as a potential problem is some ISPs refusing to resolve .XXX domains. Imagine if a large ISP began blocking all access to these domains, or began charging their customers more for access to them.
We filter XXX websites so you don't have to! A lovely, potential money making feature to market. |
Actually I was reading that $60 is the wholesale price before it goes through a vendor. They are saying a markup would be added from those parties, so expect anywhere from $60 up.
|
$60 is unreasonable. They would literally have to make this conversion mandatory to see any result. Otherwise I will not spend 60 bucks. Also, there is talk about making it mandatory since it would allow parents to control .xxx to be prevented from showing on their browsers.
|
A dot whatever (kid, cld, u18) containing contents deemed suitable to <18 people would've been so much simpler.
But what the fuck would I know... |dizzy| |
This is one big bullshit. I can imagine myself just one option, how can this .xxx TLD be successful. If major SEs (from therir choice or forced by government) would start prioritizing sites based on such a domains.
You guys from US, no offence, but when I am reading something about 2257 or about this .xxx TLD, it always came to my mind one story I am hearing very often. It is about some woman in US, who sued out big $$$ on microwave oven manufacturer. She dried out her wet cat in her MW oven and guess what ... the cat has died. The problem was that it was not written in the manual that you can not dry out animals in that oven. And I always wanted to know if this story is true or not. Anyways - it looks like there is some presumption in your law that all people are stupid idiots and whatever will be served to them must count with this. |
I don't know if that's true or not, but a guy sucessfully sued a RV manufacturer because he put cruise control on and went back to make a cup of coffee in his brand new RV. Naturally the RV swerved off the highway and crashed. I guess he confused cruise control with auto pilot which though often seen in science fiction movies isn't something developed for civilian road vehicals(yet).
Also, someone fried their poodle in a microwave about 20 years ago. I think they lived in Long Island. Or maybe I was on the Island when I heard it. |

Then you'd start seeing commercials, "Get NetAdult access for just $9.95. There's no extra charge for searching sex sites". 2257, .xxx and this week's request to gain access to Internet records without notifying anyone. See a pattern? |

Well said. This is not political - YET. (At least, not openly.) Right now this is about profits. But you can bet your booty that once the .xxx TLD is in common use, the arbiters of morality will do everything in their power to ghettoize adult content. |

That is not good it says that it should be avaliable for the end of the year...
|
Why isnt it good - for those that wanted the change its a good thing - just like the new hotel and travel top level domains that got approved at the same time - nothing about this is mandatory - all voluntary if ya want to use them - although if you really have nothing better to do with $60 per domain Ive got some real junkers you can have for that much :)
