LOL, yeah I actually wouldn't mind a cellphone about as big as the 80's big ass white ones...who cares if the radiation from it could fry an egg.

I'm thinking of replacing my phone and getting a blackberry instead. It looks a little bigger, a little more man-sized, lol.

Here's a question for those more knowledgable then me.

What is the purpose of the PCI-E 1X slots? Some motherboards come with 3 of these things and I've yet to find an adapter card of any type that will work in these slots. With Gigabit Ethernet built into most boards these days is there any purpose in having these slots?

Yeah, I remember having a cell phone that came in a wooden box. Bigger then a laptop in every direction.

limited pci-express explanation.....updated, revised (faster) pci. You can get newer video cards in pci-e...simple dual video card capability (gamers).
Supposedly pci-e will be replacing regular pci slots.

I understand the purpose of PCI-E 16X as those are for graphics cards. It's the PCI-E 1X that I don't understand. I can't find a single adapter made for this format and some mothboards come with 3 slots and all seem to have at least 1.

Its increased the bandwidth to 500MB/S instead of 133, and each PCIE slot has its own data lanes, instead of the PCI bus, where the 133 bandwidth was shared out to each slot

the rest of the system has had upgrades done over the years except for pci which has stood its ground for 10+years

that being said , i think pci will stick around for another few years

My AMD 3200 had a few heat issues last summer. On a couple of days with 36-39 degrees CELSIUS (and no airconditioning) it simply re-booted in the middle of a process. But an extra fan and better ventilated place for the box solved the problem quickly...

I would always stick with AMD in a desktop - mostly because I hate to strengthen a monopoly with my purchase. My first AMD was a 50 Mhz notebook in 1993, then a K5/266 PC in 1995, and ever since I've only bought AMD desktops, and have been happy with all of them. And you can't go wrong with a decent ASUS motherboard!
Notebooks are different story, because I believe Intel has the cooling/power saving/WiFi issues better under control.

case ventilation is something you should take some time to fix up , keep the dust build up down , tie your cables together , can buy some garden hosing stuff slice the hose down the middle shove your cables in the hose that use some of those zip ties to keep the hose and cables together

ide cables are another thing , can get some rounded cables or can you make your own by carfully slicing the ide up , then again use some zip ties to secure the cable

intake and exhaust fans also , try to keep a pc a few inches away from walls so that the exhaust can work , and don't have your case enclosed in desk space

At least I've decided on the Antec P180 case which offers 3 fans and keeps the power supply seperated from everything else so heat should not be an issue. It has enough room for a nice RAID array and can handle a fan just to cool the added drives.
