when cnn.com and cnnfn.com went to the wide layout, I stopped using them.

Even though my screen is 1280, my bookmark sidebar takes space, and I don't have my browser open fullscreen, and can't stand the right-left scrolling.

Although I guess I am not the typical surfer since I don't leave my browser window sized to the max screen res.

Ditto of what cd34 said about browser size and not using websites wider then a normal piece of letter sized paper.

I think there is a very good reason that writing paper is more or less the same size worldwide.

If your banner has a stripy or textured background like the GG&J one as above then you can save as an image a vertical strip of pixels and set it as the background of a table in which you place your banner. Add a bit of CSS manipulated text each side and you get a banner/header which resizes with the page, plus has text in for the SE which is cool.
