Jim, if the evolution of intelligence is related to the age of the planet, which is related to the age of the star, we here on this planet happen to be circling a comparitively younger star.

There are star systems, and presumably planets, billions of years older than ours.

All you would need is a planet a few thousand years ahead of us to produce advanced aliens, compared to us.

No, I'm not personally big into aliens, but I do know there are young stars and older stars, and the sun is a little bit younger rather than older.

Galaxy Song

Spoken: Whenever life gets you down Mrs. Brown,
And things seem hard or tough,
And people are stupid, obnoxious or daft
And you feel that you've had quite enough...

Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at nine hundred miles an hour,
That's orbiting at nineteen miles a second, so it's reckoned,
A sun that is the source of all our power.
The sun and you and me and all the stars that we can see
Are moving at a million miles a day
In an outer spiral arm, at forty thousand miles an hour,
Of the galaxy we call the 'Milky Way'.

Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars.
It's a hundred thousand light years side to side.
It bulges in the middle, sixteen thousand light years thick,
But out by us it's just three thousand light years wide.
We're thirty thousand light years from galactic central point.
We go round every two hundred million years,
And our galaxy is only one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe.

The universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding
In all of the directions it can whizz
As fast as it can go, the speed of light, you know,
Twelve million miles a minute and that's the fastest speed there is.
So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,
How amazingly unlikely is your birth,
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere up in space,
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth.

The problem with the whole concept that started this thread is that you put any credence in a storybook that was written to justify a religion - anyone can write "tales" and publish them for the readers enjoyment - to create a story and then try to pass it off as a true historical account of reality is entirely idiotic
Anyone wanna explain to me how Adams son (I believe this story was called Genesis) married and had children when Adam and Eve only had two sons? Either he was the first true Oedipus complex afflicted human (incest at its best) or someone just forgot a few little details in their storytales.
If you need religion to explain life you are definitely missing out on the big picture here.

Stop asking questions. You are not supposed to learn you are supposed to have faith. I bet you read too :D

1. Christians have the most nukes.
2. Christians see it as their mission to convert everyone else.

Some religions spread through gentle teaching. Some spread through converting or killing off those that can't be converted.

Bill is right. The universe is about 13 billion old and to have 2 things develop at the same speed over the course of 13 billion years is highly unlikely. Where would we be today if we developed at the time that Dinosaurs developed?

The Big Bang theory is based on an idea that an explosion happened in the center of the universe and exploded outward, and according to all the brains, the universe is still expanding, so going by that, the outside edges is older then the inside closer to the center, so if that is the case, lets assume we are in the middle of it all and anything closer to the center then us is less developed, and anything farther from the center is more developed.

OW.... that hurt my brain.....|dizzy|

Love this thread! :) I've always thought that the best way to put an end to all this terrorism bullshit (Muslims anyway) is to educate their youth - especially science/evolution. Unfortunately though, there are plenty of well educated terrorist fuckwads. Then again they probably don't teach evolution in Saudi Arabia or any Islamic state for that matter simply because it would mean Allah was kin to The Tooth Fairy, Santa Claus, The Easter Bunny, etc. The Bible/Koran/Etc. - find it in the fiction section at a book store near you!

We're coming along at least..

PS - Sounds like I'm not the only Science Channel junkie in here :D
