One of the main drawbacks may be noise pollution but from what I have read, there are turbines now available that are so quiet you don't even notice them.
As for planning and permits, household turbines are acceptable but I would still check with our neighbors just to make sure that they will have no objections.
I will let you know more once we have the furnace quotes in and have been down to the planning office. If nothing else it will be interesting to see what's said but there are already a number of farms in the area that generate power from the wind using similar systems.

I read about the SkyStream that my town uses in Mother Earth News magazine I get, and its supposed to be one of the quieter ones. I'm lucky too when we can finally get to one, I don't have neighbors on either side of me.

This is what Ed Begley Jr. used on his home in CA, which looks to have neighbors pretty close by. Might want to check it out too.

Those look like they just might generate the 1.21 gigawatts needed by a flux capacitor in a cat 5 hurricane. I wonder if you could mount one on the back of a De Lorean?

That's a nice link Red Cherry, thanks for posting it.

We had a preliminary quote for a high efficiency electric furnace of 3k and that surprised me because it's only $600 dearer than a standard electric furnace. The price does not include the heat pump necessary to go with it though. We won't have the full quote for a few days.

That's a cool idea Cleo but who drives around in a hurricane? Maybe you could try fitting one to the Corvette and give us an update on its effectiveness :)
