They seem to have a lot of dns or connection problems - I usually just keep trying (and it seems to be working now)

I know that whois.sc has a lot of DNS issues as GG mentioned - but the format for finding out about one specific domain would be http://whois.sc/domainname.com doesn't matter if you use the www.whois or without :)
In the page they return is a link for a reverse lookup, it will also list the nameservers, the "supposed" registrants name and contact info and lots of other nifty stuff like what other domains are also on that IP address :)

Well worth paying the monthly fee to see up to 1000 domains at an IP address.

Sounds a bit like the "logic" of the password-sharing sites, where they have a disclaimer about them being there for the benefit of the paysite owners, to let them know about compromised sites/passwords. They also offer to take down any stolen passwords if the site owner "requests" it. Yeah, what nice folks performing such a useful service. |bigfuckin
