Sorry to hear Jim
been going through the same crap with my Dad for the last couple years

digifan 2008-04-04 02:41 PM

Ouch it is real sad... but the trial is a chance and a good one. :(

Jim 2008-04-04 02:44 PM

And, the insurance just gave us a conditional approval. Not sure what that really means but it seems they don't want to pay for the first night at the hospital. |huh

They said they will pay for anything medically needed. We will know when we are going on Monday.

Simon 2008-04-04 03:56 PM

All good wishes for success with the trial, and for the easiest possible time for you both while you're there.

Sloan-Kettering and the Anderson Cancer Center in Texas are so far above the others they may as well both be #1.

I know :) I have been doing a ton of research since the day Sloan-Kettering was mentioned. And for skin cancer, it really is the best place to be if you have to be at a place like that.

And I really have to hand it to my insurance company. Dealing with the makes me think Michael Moore was full of shit. Our insurance company not only approved this "out of network" huge expense in less than a day but when we started with them, they didn't care about the pre-existing cancer and they even backdated our membership to cover gamma knife surgery.

Welllll having tried to switch insurance companies and got denied with two different insurance companies due to pre existing very mild asthma, Michael Moore isn't full of shit on most companies.

May I ask who you are with? Maybe I can get a quote from them and save us some money. MadHatter and I pay alot for ours and to get our rates as low as they are we have a 5,0000 deductible a peice. :(

And good luck to you and your wife, she has been in my prayers for awhile. I'm so sorry that is happening to you.

Bobc01 2008-04-04 07:27 PM

All the best to you both on the trial, would be great to hear it's been a success.

I think the problems come from people getting insurance on their own without a group. All local chambers of commerce offer health insurance. And when you get it from them, you are considered an employee. The only information the insurance company asked for after I paid our chamber $100 to join was Name and SSN.

If you join alone, insurance companies can charge you any amount they choose and even have a $5000 deductible. To do that to you while you are in a group, they have to charge the entire group the same.

I would love for everyone to be able to use our insurance company but it's only available to people in Central New York.

Is that NY apple or something like that??? I remember we had them (or something apple related in the name) and they were excellent. We had 2 employees and multiple family members and it was still fairly resaonable. .

RC: One of my son's friends is in the biz here and swears he can get me a great policy at reasonable rates. It remains to be seen. However our only pre-existing condition is fat. Who knows how that might effect our deductible/monthly payments. |huh If it's any good i'll email you. I think NV is one of the few states that has no uninsured pool and offers a state policy. |banghead|

Jim 2008-04-05 09:05 AM

It's MVP Healthcare. It has an apple in the logo but that's it. NY doesn't have a pool either but they have a law that says if you are insured for 11 months, you can't be turned down by anyone. We were not insured for 11 months and just got lucky, I guess. I mean, damn...we had the pre-existing condition of cancer.

I have seen stories of people that get insurance on their own and when something happens, their rates go as high as $50k/month. I am willing to pay the $100/year to be part of a large group.

Greenguy 2008-04-16 08:47 AM

Jim called me from the local hospital this morning. Vicky was having horrible stomach pains last night & it appears some of the meds she's on have caused a perforation in her stomach :(

She's in surgery now & if all goes well, she'll be sedated for the next few days while it heals.

I'll keep everyone posted.

Tekster 2008-04-16 09:24 AM

Wishing all the best to Vicky, you are in our thoughts.

Greenguy 2008-04-16 09:51 AM

Update - Vicky's out of surgery. She had a tear in her colon & they had to remove it. There was also an infection that they have to keep an eye on for the next few days, which means they didn't close her up.

Oddly enough, this is better than what they thought it was (tear in the stomach) as she should be home in about 2 weeks (fingers crossed)

The really bad aspect of all of this is that the surgery pretty much shits on the NYC thing :(

RedCherry 2008-04-16 10:13 AM

Sorry to hear about Vicky and the surgery may stop or postpone her treatment. Hopefully it all works out for her. My prayers go with them both.

digifan 2008-04-16 10:39 AM

Oh my.. I wish her the best, a quick recovery and whatever she needs now and a lot of strength to Jim. These med.s have horrible side effects. I wish them the best.

T Pat 2008-04-16 10:57 AM

Jim and Vicky stay strong, you guys are in my thoughts.

Fonz 2008-04-16 11:19 AM

Sending lots of positive vibes to Vicky, hope everything will turn out ok.
Hang in there Vicky and Jim.

Simon 2008-04-16 11:35 AM

All my best wishes to you both, Jim and Vicky.
Stay strong and make it through this one like all the others.

Thanks for the updates Greenie.

It seems like it's one thing after another for her which is so sad. My prayers are with both of them.

Ramster 2008-04-16 12:07 PM

That's terrible news. Glad the surgery went well at least. Best wishes Jim. :)

Jim 2008-04-17 07:37 AM

Hi Guys
I am home for a couple of hours to shower and make sure the house is still in order. Vickie is doing and feeling much better but we are still far from being out of the woods.

ArtWilliams 2008-04-17 07:45 AM

My thoughts are with you, Jim.

Jim 2008-04-17 08:09 AM

And thank you guys for your thoughts.

stuveltje 2008-04-17 10:47 AM

i am glad she is feeling better after the troubles with the meds and i am sending my good dutch vibes to you both and i hope all goes fine and in a good way. (stu<----wishes she could say it in a better way, but hopes jim and vicky will understand what i mean)

docholly 2008-04-17 11:00 AM

Wow.. so sorry to hear this development but glad that it seems to be taken care of and hopefully Victoria will have a speedy recovery from this and get back to kicking cancer's ass. |thumb

Jim 2008-04-17 07:42 PM

Quick update and then back to the hospital. She is feeling about the same as this morning. I don't think she is in a lot of pain but the hydromorphone has a lot to do with that. They are moving her from ICU tomorrow and she may be able to eat. She will be able to drink something for sure.

All this is a huge change from yesterday morning when the surgeons suggested they just make her comfortable and not do the surgery. They said it would all be over in a couple of days without the surgery.

Anyway, I am off again. I'll post another update tomorrow.

bluemoney 2008-04-17 08:30 PM

My best wishes to you and your wife Jim.

Ms Naughty 2008-04-17 08:31 PM

I haven't been paying attention to this forum much so I missed the original thread. In any case, my thoughts are with you and your wife Jim, hope it all goes well and that she's better soon.

And as an Aussie who has access to universal health care, I can only feel shocked that you guys have to deal with all the bullshit about insurance on top of a major health problem like this. I'm glad that was relatively easy, anyway.

Bill 2008-04-17 08:40 PM

Like everybody is saying, our thoughts and hopes are with ya man.

Bobc01 2008-04-18 04:46 AM

Very best wishes to you and the wife Jim, a very brave lady i think.

Jim 2008-04-20 12:10 PM

I gave a quick update in the morning thread but here is the longer version.

All of us were surprised yet very happy when we heard she would be released from the hospital yesterday. She got home around 4:00PM and seems to be doing ok. She does have an open surgery wound that we have to care for and of course, she has no colon. So we have to do everything that goes along with that. We were asked to go to Memorial Sloan Kettering by ambulance Monday. But, we are still thinking about it. She really doesn't want to go into the hospital unless she absolutely has to. If we don't go Monday, it will probably be Wednesday. We, including her local doctors think we should wait until she heals more. But, the good news is that we are going back to NYC. :)

I think that's it for now...

T Pat 2008-04-20 12:29 PM

Good News Jim
I don't blame Vickie a bit for not being in a hurry to go back in the hospital.
A good friend of the families had his colon removed and it didn't slow him down a bit, he water skied, rode horses and hunted hard for 20+ years with no colon.

Simon 2008-04-20 12:40 PM

That is good news, Jim, and very good to hear it too.
A little rest and Vicky will be ready for NYC.
And I know stories like Pat mentioned too.

plateman 2008-04-21 02:15 PM

good to hear jim, i went through the same opperation in my late 20s

i almost died cause i thought i had the stomach flu, but instead my lower colon was ruptured, man was i sick from the infection, i even had a shit bag for about 6 months till i healed up, then i had another operation to hook me up normal, and havent had a bit of trouble since

i know all the things you and your wife have been though with her other problem from reading the board, and hope the bumps smooth out soon
