But here's the thing... I have a brain... If I wanted to sell to you guys... I could always just create some new nick... suck up to all of you for a few months and then sell to you... but that's not me at all... |

No need for an apology now though :D As a BTW though, in this biz if you don't sell you don't eat. |

Here's the thing... Do you own or run all of the LLs out there? No... Do all the other LLs owners have the same knowledge you and the old timers have? No.. maybe some of the other smaller newer LL owners would like to discuss these types of things.. but instead, because of the negative attitude of you and some others they're afraid to on this board... This board is not known as being all that friendly unless you're one of the "in" kids... and yet it's supposed to be THE place for LLs and LL submitters... |

First though, I want to say that I'm wide awake and bored on a Saturday morning and might not have posted in this thread at all if I had something else that needed doing right now. But I don't. So I want to say "Hello" to Viper and "thanks" for starting this thread which, in three pages, has mutated into something much different than I think he intended. Okay, let me get back to the quotes thing before I forget. I quoted Hashbury above because I suffer from an affliction that I know also plagues Useless Warrior. It's the pain caused by seeing something put between quotation marks for no good reason. Or maybe just for an unclear reason. I'm not a Grammar Nazi, and I'm really bringing this up with good intentions. So far, and I might have missed some, there have been at least 15 words quoted by Viper for reasons which create more questions than answers. What I mean are words like these, all of which were set off inside quotation marks like this when they were used: "simple," "sign up," "rating," "prove," "broke," "brilliant," "disagree," "easy," "partners," "hopefull," "attack," "names," "real," "help," and "tone." (I'm not including "sales," "bragging," "whiner" or "crybaby" in that list since those words were actually used by someone else before Viper quoted them.) Here's the point I want to make. For many people, when they see a word in quotations and it's not because it's something that someone else said which is being quoted by the other writer, they'll often assume that what the writer is doing is intentionally adding emphasis instead (although it's the wrong method to do so). And often the assumption is also made that the writer is using those misplaced quotes to signal irony or sarcasm, or to sneer at the reader in some way. To boil it down a bit, using quotation marks around single words which are not words that someone else said and which are now being quoted, is often picked up by the readers mind as if the writer is speaking out loud and using the gesture that some call "air quotes" to indicate that the word they're using may be the opposite of what they really mean. Further boiling: I've seen this simple misuse of quotation marks help provoke flame wars of great magnitude. So it's possible that this may be contributing a bit to what's happening here. Maybe more than a bit. Bottom line: I'd love to see a good discussion of some of the points raised here, but I'm not sure we haven't already stirred up too much muck for that to happen in this thread. Time for more |coffee . |
I like Abba, too.

That's what a trusted submitter would have done. (and no, I'm not going to read this book - but I would have joined in if I was at home last night) |

(and oddly enough, even though you don't think it, I'd consider you one of the "in" kids based on your previous posts & LL submits) |

I also don't understand why I would even need to tell kit in private or even directly.. according to UW, all of you experienced LL owners allready understand that your captcha has been defeated and that it's built into auto submitter software... Just doesn't make sense to me... |

Sorry viper for going off topic. Please continue your rant. |popcorn| |
ok.. so I'll make one last post in maybe some attempt to add some value to this thread.. something I would have eventually brought up if it had been a valuable discussion.
It's been said that I'm preaching the value of auto submitting... that I'm advocating letting cheaters submit to you... I guess in some way I am... After going thru all the pain and hassle on my TGPs everyone else has, I started to work on things that were more SEO related and also would be automated... and then I had an epiphany... Everyone knows that the best traffic is SE traffic... and that you need inbound links to help get yourself better listings... Some will say they need to be relevent.. or have value/PR etc.. but the fact is that thousands of crap inbound links still trumps a few of the others, especially if they're one way which is very hard to get... So my epiphany was "why the hell am I throwing away all those free inbound hardlinks???".. Seriously.. thousands of inbound links a year that we all just throw away... Free except for the minute or two it takes to review the site.. A hell of a lot less time than trying to find link exchanges or build up your own link farms... So how do you take advantage of this?? You build yourself a few crappy link dump type sites (use link dump software so the site is multipage) loaded with ads.. You only do enough work on them so that they get crawled by the SEs at least once a week and you don't actually try and get traffic to it.. that's not why you have them... Hire yourself some programmer to write you a custom script that will list free sites over there and will scan and delete them for redirecting or 404 etc... it's pretty simple and will most likely only cost $100 or so.... Now open up your submissions and let the links flow.... Every site that gets automatically banned, deleted or that you decline gets listed over on those sites.... Now you've got free ONE WAY links to your sites.. And you'll be kicking yourself for having gotten rid of those category recips like everyone else in that other thread... and it's all automated.. And yes, it's going to help your competitors, but not to the same level it's going to help you since you'll be smart enough to use category recips and also, not every one of those sites will have recips to your competitors but they'll have them to you... So the net result is more links for you... If it's a real concern, then you could have your programmer keep track of the links to your competitors and not list every site over there that has recips to them. So there you go... There's value in those autosubmitted and cheater sites that every one of us has thrown away... I'm done.. Take all this for what you will... I'm going back to lurking... |

Abba were a take off of Mamas and Papas. I like them better.

Fonz -- no need to say "sorry" on that one, it was a good example of quoting correctly. |thumb
I like the Mamas and Papas better too. ABBA was always too cheery sounding for me. With the Ms&Ps you could hear the dark side. :) . |

Fonz I may just say afew-I was born and raised in the midwest ya know :D
My writing is only the half of it. Even though I believe I have a flat dialect with no noticeable accent I do on rare occassion and a "r" to the middle of words. I'll give you an example. I wanted toask my wife if she had washed my clothes but it came out "Did you warsh my clothes". My wife went through the roof. I once again explained to her that I was raised in South St.Louis and thats a common butchering of the language there. I'm just about broke of that habit but it does slip out once in a while. Its so common in St.Louis than Pizza hut did a commercial with the two characters talking using such words as "fark" (for fork) and highway "farty far" (for 44). It caused such a backlash that Pizza hut had to withdraw the commercial. Now I live about 70miles south of St.louis and have a whole new set of problems. Downhere is a strange mix of midwestern and souther dialects. What new speech impediment can I pick up now? Oh, Iapologize for being so far off topic but it wasn't exactly my fault :D |
I wouldn't compare Mommas and Pappas to Abba. I mean it's the same presentation, but it's like comparing Beatles to Alabama. Oranges and Apples.
Actually I guess you could do that...but here's the deal, Abba had a more progressive sound. |
No. Abba had a more banal sound. Ms&Ps were musicians and originators. You're right, there's no comparison. ;)
|
My apologies for mentioning Abba - it wasn't meant to stir up such heated off-topic debate.
