Here in Finland it's a PITA to buy a gun and have a permit, so question about rights to carry a firearm is not so hot here. Everyday people don't have guns, never had, and never wanted.

People who live in countryside has rifles and shotguns for hunting, and I have seen some Old McDonald's that have collection of old revolvers and automatic hand guns - illegal or not, I don't know.

We don't have many crimes where someone got shot. Usually if something like that happens, it's male, drunk as a skunk, who shoot in his own home, then barricade there when police come and threatens to shoot everybody including himself.

Exception of the Rule is Oulu, where they used to shoot in the streets at evening some years ago. Crazy people there.

I was once in a restaurant where one dude got mad to his girlfriend, grab a gun and shot himself on the leg. Pathetic? May be...I heard he had to move from town as he was everybody's laughing stock (most of the cities here are small).

I haven't thought about guns a lot. We don't have any, and I don't believe we ever will. I don't hate them, as no one has shot me (yet).

If I'd live in USA, I believe I had to make a decision to buy one or not.

The thread that won't go away.

I could never get over the fact that Janway was once Mrs Columbo. I do like the new "Enterprise" though. Never really liked Scott Backula but T'Pol just has something about her.

Cleo 2004-03-24 02:21 PM

I like the new Enterprise too. :)

T'Pol is very interesting, or at least I find her so. :D

venturi 2004-03-24 07:27 PM

Has "Enterprise" come into it's own yet? I got really turned off after the 1st season - even Scott Backula couldn't save it at that point. The characters were flat the plots stopped short of a real ending, it just didn't do anything for me. If it's gotten better someone let me know and maybe we'll give it a try again.

Interesting thread - while I don't own a gun, I did shoot a lot when I was younger when I served in the army cadets - and would like to take up shooting again at some point. I think the whole issues of gun control, and in particular gun crime, is a pretty complex subject.

I live in a county awash with guns - there are more guns per head of population here in Swizerland than any other country in the world, as far as I'm aware.

This is because when Switzerland was founded in 1291 armed citizens were the cornerstone of the countires defence, and remains so to this day - in fact, the second amendment of your constitution is based on the Swiss model which inspired the American revolutionaries, like John Adams and Patrick Henry.

Despite all these guns though - crime is very, very, low here indeed - that's what I like about this place the most.

Crime is low pretty uch in other countries because they respect the punnishment they may get if they brake the law.

Here in the US of A you get treated better while in the prision system. I don't have dental insurance. If I was to go to prision I would get full medical attention, and full dental. It cost about 18K a year to keep a person in prision each year every year they are locked up.

I had a friend that made more money while in a state prision then on the outside. (He made over 80K dealing drugs) On the out side he couldnt hold a job paying just under 15K a year. Hes been out and cleaned up his act since then. He also sued a prision guard for braking his coller bone, and he won 35K in that law suit.

If you have nothing to lose you can make a good living on the inside.

It's a slap on the hand for just about anything you do crime wise.

Unlike with other countries, if you get caught stealing you get your hand chopped off. If a woman is caught having an affair in the middle east she is stoned to death in public.

That's an interesting opinion about respect for the punishment being the difference between US and Swiss crime rates.

I have often heard stories about people being arrested in the US and thought, "wow, it sounds like it is very easy to get yourself locked up over there"

It's probably reasonable to assume that when too many people you know have been to prison it starts to lose it's mystique and is less scary.

As far as the prisons being an attractive option... I doubt that is a factor in the crime rate.. I would argue the more we spend on prisoners and the less we treat them like "criminals" the less likely they are to act like criminals on release... if prisons where paid on performance for minimizing re-offender numbers it's my bet they would be much more like University/Holiday Camps for first time offenders... and the community might even be happy to spend 10 times the current amount of money "re-educating" criminals... rather than wasting dollars on a system based mainly on punishment.

Then again, "state re-education centres" might be a worry in themselves come to think of it :p

Someone pass me a gun! |peace|

doublep 2004-03-29 02:27 AM

Actually - the solution is simple - they should just combine the prison program with the Mars program!

3 STRIKES AND YOU'RE OUT IN SPACE!

Eureka!!

Yeah... but those countires are full of mad cunts with a wierd taste in head dress!

SlickRick 2004-04-17 04:07 PM

Well Cleo as I promissed.

I stated I would watch Bowling for Columbine when I saw it on one of the movie channels.

What a bunch of bull shit. Fucking Moore is so aginst gun rights, but with his interview with Mr. Charlton Heston; Moore showed he was a card carrying member of the NRA... Now if he was againsts it why would he spend money to support something he was so againsts?!!!!

Moore is nothing more then hippocrate that benifited from the making of that movie filled with lies.

Since this thread is still here, I'll add my 2c.
I own three guns one I bought my self the other two was left to me by my grandfather. I South Africa we have a big problem with crime. Almost every person I know owns a gun. They want to ban guns here, but they can't disarm the criminals. If they ban guns for the public I will get a gun illegal, if they can do something about the high crime rate in the country then I would not mind if I have no gun. Most of the time criminals are caught in our country they escape from prison or get very light punisment. The prisons here are not working to scare them, and they get good treatment in prison. Sample of sentences that I know was handed out to criminals:
1998: Armed robbery - 3 years
1999: Theft: 6 months, they guy stole my vcr and playstation
2001: Drunk driving - R800-00 fine about $130

Members of parliment found guilty for fraud, they get a slap on the hand and told not to do it again.

About six months ago they tried to break in to my house when only my wife and son were their one night. She phoned the police and me. It took me 4 minutes to get home, the police took over 2 hours. While I was driving I phoned the emergency service similar to 911 and was put on hold, If I did not get home and my wife shot the intruders, she would have been charged with manslaughter or something, the criminals would get maybe 30 days to 3 months in prison.

And there lies the problem… While you are stoned out of your mind on prescription drugs talking to paper clips and making posts that are incomprehensible how are you suppose to be responsible enough not to injure yourself or someone else with one of the guns that you own?

Here go watch a movie instead of wasting your time shooting guns.

Tagged from 100ft away.

it even gives the velocity and "pain" level to the person targeted.
