Yippee! Finally have both land phone and dsl :)

Cleo 2005-10-31 01:24 PM

Power is less then one mile from my house so I'm hopping soon but with two snapped poles between me and the grid I'm not holding my breath.

The good news is I still have phones and backup ADSL plus if I run out of gas in four days it will not be a problem since there are lots of open stations now.

MeatPounder 2005-10-31 02:09 PM

I hope so Cleo, my sister up in Boca got power back today.
As more and more pockets go on all of a sudden your grid will pop on. One thing to watch for is to make sure anything that was on at the onset has been switched off.
There have been several fires from stoves that were being used when power went out and people forgot the burners were on.
Plus one of my clients in Biscayne Park got power for about 2 minutes when the overload surge from too many in her neighborhood leaving things on that the sudden draw blew up a transformer down the street from them. Took them another 24 hrs to get back power after that.

Cleo 2005-10-31 03:09 PM

Power is now less then a half a mile from my house but no one in my neighborhood has it yet.

Best thing I ever did was to buy a generator and have lots of fuel for it. I'm still grinning about my friends teasing me about stocking so much fuel. Just wait until they see how much fuel I have for the next one. :D

I must admit, when I heard you had 80 gallons of fuel, I thought that was excessive. My stash of 45 gallons would have been depleted already had I not gotten power back, although, by the time I ran low, gas lines were 20-30 minutes or less.

I will have 3 things taken care of before next hurricane season. :)

Cleo 2005-10-31 05:03 PM

I've kind of lost track but I think that I have gone through about 120 gallons so far so I'm thinking about 200 gallons for next time.

I didn't loose my phone line and backup ADSL but I know lots of people that did loose their land line. I'm wondering what I could have in case I did loose my land line. The only thing I can think of is satellite internet which isn't very good and kind of expensive.

On a non related note my old 22" CRT monitor died today and now I'm using an even older 21" CRT that actually seems to have a better image. I guess I should break down and get a LCD soon.

MeatPounder 2005-10-31 06:36 PM

Another of the problems with living in a condo is that we are not allowed generators :(
I actually have one that just sat idle during the blackout

Good thing is my convo with bell south was quite fruitful today.

Not only has next months bill for both phone and dsl been reduced by 1/4 due to the outage, but I also am getting a months free dsl for the inconvinience :)

Plus they finally knocked my extreme dsl down 10 bucks a month from now on...that is part of their general price reduction but it added to the fruits of my calls today :)

amber438 2005-10-31 10:16 PM

Well, I just got off the phone with my mother in West Palm
She just got the power on about 20 min ago but there are still a lot of old folks in century village with no power
She also said that there is a 9 pm curfew in west palm..guess strip gin rummy is out for them for a while.

|pimpin

cd34 2005-10-31 10:39 PM

The 9pm curfew is for people south of Southern Blvd. North of Southern Blvd has no curfew. So, your mom is all set for strip gin rummy.

So, when I take the mail out to the mailbox in a few minutes, I'll be breaking the law as I step onto city property. :)

Glad she's ok -- you might let her know about the rummy.

Meatpounder, I think the condo association would have had a hard time keeping me from running a generator. :)

Cleo 2005-11-01 07:06 AM

Still no power here and I'm guessing that it will be a few more days with my broken poles. Doing good on fuel but this is getting expensive with my $30 a day gas habit.

House guests left last night since their place has power and the kids wanted to go home to be with their friends.

Lots of people now have generators. It's a bit noisy at night wit h all of them running. Barnes & Noble books is selling generators up the street from me but gas cans for fuel are still no where to be found.

docholly 2005-11-01 07:40 AM

dayam.. i can't believe how long this is taking.

one of my kids got power back yesterday.. so the rest are all staying with her. 1 of them got disgusted and went to Jamaica for 2 weeks.

1 kid has power AND phone at her job so she's the one keeping us informed.

kind of makes you wonder what's in store for next season.

Cleo: do they have frequent buyers cards at the gas stations? maybe you'll qualify for a 'wax' job...lmao..

I should tell them that I want a wash and wax for my generator. :D

These storms are some learning experience.

We get to learn a foreign language one letter at a time.

I had no idea that Omega was the last letter of the Greek alphabet.
http://www.colorado.edu/greeks/alphabeta.html

I'm really hoping that we never have a year where we get hit by hurricane Omega.

Chop Smith 2005-11-18 10:47 PM

Now I know you were not raised in the bible belt - "He is the Alpha and the Omega." Interpreted in these parts as He is the beginning and the end.

Cleo 2005-11-18 10:54 PM

I was raised mostly in clubs during the day when they were closed by the people that ran and worked them. We listened to Zeta rock (the local radio station at the time) and I always thought that was the last letter of the Greek alphabet until today.

The bible… that's like that book that you find in cheap hotels isn't it?

lol.....I haven't heard that in while.

Alpha and Omega is also used to explain the heirachy within a wolf pack. Alpha being the lead wolf and breeder & Omega being the lowest status wolf, normally the one that gets picked on & takes care of the cubs.

I hope Gamma winds up nothing but a tropical storm, if that, when it gets here.
Everyone down here is still drying out from Wilma's storm surges.

Here are a few pics of how the surge looked around here.

I think things will be getting worse, including more storms coming across the Gulf at us, for several years to come. I'm seriously thinking about moving out of the Keys before next hurricane season. I'm not sure where I'd go yet, but definitely nowhere in Florida, or anywhere in hurricane or tornado areas. Actually I'll probably post looking for ideas at some point. :)

Move to Nevada.. you'll have Ocean front property in a few years... we get a few jiggles when the quakes hit.. some rain in Dec-Feb and HOT humid-free summers.. but other than that.. No Problems, mon.

Cleo 2005-11-19 08:50 AM

I'll have to post some pics of me holding on to my ass screaming in terror next time. That is if my hand has healed enough to actually be able to use a camera by the time the next one hits.

It looks like this one might become a non event but I'm really watching it to decide if I need to fill up my 175 gallon fuel farm that I'm now the owner of. |shocking|

Still trying to get someone out here to drastically trim what it left of the big ficus tree in my backyard. I thought that I would have all winter, spring, and summer to get it done but silly me…
