Do You Play an Instrument?

Surely we have some musical talent lurking around here? So what do (or did) you play?
I still like to play around on the guitar and piano whenever I'm feeling "creative", lol. :D
Anyone ever play in a band?

Jim 2005-03-16 12:08 PM

I wish I did.
I took 6 years of piano lessons and I can play MaryAnne :) I own a really expensive Gibson Les Paul Black Beauty with Gold Hardware but can't even play Smoke on the Water. I am actually thinking it may be time to get rid of the guitar.

When I was very young, one summer when I was a latchkey kid, I took Piano, Saxophone and Guitar lessons at the summer school.

Throughout school, I ended up playing Alto Sax and the last two years of High School, Baritone Sax. I played in Concert, Marching and Jazz band, but, two weeks after I graduated high school I got my drivers license, stopped riding my bike, put the instruments away and haven't touched them since.

I can still read music, can probably plunk out a few tunes on the piano, it would take a little time to get back into the saxophone, and probably a little time for guitar.

Now, I can play a mean radio. (well, not really, I listen to mp3/ogg files)

I don't play any one instrument, but I do use programs like Reason to develop music for movies, sound effects, and such... I have been involved in the music business on and off since I was 16. The new tools that are out there make it possible for someone like me to build all sorts of interesting things.

I used to write .mod files on my C64 with its unique sound chip.

I have lost all ability to do graphics, pick colors or create music -- and I sing poorly too. I will just stick to what I know.

Jim, that looks like a pretty nice Gibson... any reason for getting rid of it? I'm a Fender fan myself... my weapon of choice is my Telecaster Special Edition, though I don't think the neighbors appreciate it nearly as much as me. |headbang|

I've been in several bands, recorded a couple albums. I've been singing since I was a kid, and a lot of what I do is rock/acoustic rock/metal. No drug in the world is better than standing on a stage in front of a few hundred people who love your music :)

I think it was '75 when I got my guitar. I had a Fender Acousto-electric that was sort of a maroon color with a white pinstripe. Probably similar to the TC-90 today.

I do know how to play the sig though. :)

No one has said that they play the Skin Flute yet? :D

You can still be the first.

I own and play, a 1930's Selmer alto saxophone, a 1940's Conn tenor saxophone, a Hohner Telecaster Prinz, a couple of Yamaha acoustic guitars, a flute, a Yamaha PSR 4500 keyboard and an upright piano I've been playing since I was 3.

I came from a family where music lessons were mandatory. :)

msanchez 2005-03-16 01:52 PM

Been in a few bands, recorded a few records went on a few tours.

Was alot of fun.

Oh yeah I play bass. Had a cheap ass $100 bass that lasted me forever.

OK, then that makes sense. :)

Urb, music lessons were mandatory in my family too. We had to take piano lessons all summer when all the other kids got to play outside. I hated it at the time, but have to say I'm more grateful for it now. :)

I never did the cool stuff & play in a band, but I did play the violin for 5 yrs a lifetime ago. Still have it & a bunch a music. Hoping that one of the nieces or nephew would want to learn it one day so I can pass it on.

Right now, we want to find one of those victorian type bed and breakfasts so we can do a "classical" shot with it.

spookyx 2005-03-16 02:13 PM

I used to be able to play the bass guitar at one time... I could play a lot of the police and cure songs.

I think walking on the moon was the first song i could play that people could recognize |thumb

That was the point, silly. |escape|

But our orchestra did have more rebels then the band members, most of us were into punk and new wave. They had partial shaved heads, mohawks and piercing everywhere before it was the thing to do. Me, I would color my hair in neon colors (green, pink....) and dressed either like a witch or a gypsy.

It made for more interesting performances with all of us in the standard black slacks/skirts and white tops and then see all of our hair styles. |headbang|

I used to have a Steinway Grand Piano too but could never play it :) That was just a touch nicer than the guitar.

And here I was thinking that your goal was to join a cool band & play your violin with them |violin|

I've been playing the piano since I was a kid... my grandparents got me a very nice Kimball upright with the make of a grand inside... excellent sound, even as many times as we've moved it.

I played guitar, clarinet, violin and saxaphone in Jr High/High School, but the piano is the only thing that really stuck.

My son plays bass - and is teaching himself guitar, we just discovered he is excellent at playing by ear. Hubby is a drummer (got him a DW set a few years ago - fortunately he doesn't play TOO often when I'm working - lol) but he's also learning the guitar. He doesn't know it but he's getting a Guild for his birthday this fall - I've been working on a 1965 acoustic (year of his birth) from a collector for awhile... it's gorgeous - he's going to love it... he's such a spoiled baby. lol
