Screen Size

I'm moving things to a new computer and that means installing lots of software again. I'm actually reading the minimum requiements for them and most minimum requirements are "1024 x 768 resolution display, 16-bit color"

Time to make those banners bigger.

Cleo 2006-01-10 11:22 PM

My main monitor is usually set to 1600X1000.

Maybe we should start making all the banners 1600 wide.

Oh wait… I don't surf with my browser set full screen.

SirMoby 2006-01-10 11:27 PM

Obviously going 1600 with banners would be silly. However, banners of 468 on a larger screen are going to get lost on the page.

Cleo 2006-01-10 11:32 PM

But I really want to use banners that are 1600 wide.

I notice that the news sites like CNN seem to keep their pages about 888 pixels wide.

Your monitor is just too damned sexy. After I saw that thing I started shopping for one to put on my "wish" list :D

SirMoby 2006-01-10 11:35 PM

OK Cleo. You may submit sites with banners that are 1600 wide but your images should also be 1600 x 1000 with good resolution.

Cleo 2006-01-10 11:38 PM

In that case you will have to give all your bookmarkers one of these in 23 inch size and MadMax two since he is married. www.apple.com/displays/specs.html

That's the res I've used the last couple of years.

That why I love to build with headers and have no use for standard banners.

I refuse to go above 800x600. You can't make me. I'm convinced that I'll go blind attempting to read pages if I go wider.

I just upgraded my monitor from a 15" to a 19" and from 800 x 600 to 1024 x 768 resolution and the difference is amazing. Don't know why I didn't do it sooner, I get a lot more work done since the change :D

When I look at my banner stats, the 700 X 80 or 600 X 100 banners pull significantly better than the 468 / 480 ish banners do. I run 1600X1200 (20 inch screen) and I can tell you that standard 480 banners look positively tiny now.

http://www.thecounter.com/stats/2005/December/res.php

These stats show that larger than 800x600 is now 70%... another blog I looked at suggested that number to be closer to 80 -90%. I don't think it is at that level yet, but every day that goes by means another 14 inch monitor is retired and replaced with a 17 inch flat panel at 1000 X 700 or more (1024 X 768, I think is the next step up the ladder).

The size of the viewing window will change the effectiveness of your advertising, so regular old banner ads might not be your best choice anymore.

Interesting discussion. I'm going to swap out some banners and see if there's a noticable difference. Unfortunately, not many of my sponsors offer the wider banners.

Make them or have them made. That's what I do :)

I really do need to improve my graphics skills, but finding the time...
Besides, I don't really care much for doing it. As my brother says, I'm a "code head".

I've requested custom banners from sponsors in the past with mixed results. A few responded quickly, but with a less than stellar product. Some promised to add it to their next banner order, but never followed through. On a couple of occassions I actually got a top quality banner in a reasonable time frame.

Any recommendations for a good banner builder with fair prices and decent turn around time?

My friend (not URB) is quite well known and does them as a favor for me. I pay him $25 per header. Which I make back almost immediately :D

I can't really recommend anyone else because I haven't had anyone else make them for me. I am positive there are some great banner/header/footer/ people out there that are reasonable. I would ask in the "Looking for" forum and ask their prices. If they tell you the pricing is on their website I would pass...

My graphics skills are ok. Since I am a perfectionist with my own work it isn't cost effective for me to spend 5 days on a 30 min banner. LOL

EDIT::: Urb if you find the time I need some more headers made :D

If you are looking for one who is known to be very good to Gg&Jim members, I'd suggest you hit up Urb. He even speaks English, unlike most other designers. (They've started teaching it as a second language in the UK :))

If you really want sexy tits on your monitor…

Ramster 2006-01-11 10:30 AM

There is no reason why you cannot build and use banners that are 700 wide. People at the vert least are surfing at 800x600.

As far as banners go, AJ at templateempire.com is good and reasonably fast too.

Toby 2006-01-11 06:11 PM

Thanks guys, I'm gonna give my brother a shot at building banners. He's pretty handy with PhotoShop and is always looking for a way to make a buck.

Uh Cleo, you really should to post a disclaimer with that photo. I was eating lunch ;)
