CLEO - Welcome To The Darkside!

Apple Computer has released software that enables Microsoft Windows XP to run natively on Intel-based Macs.

Cleo 2006-04-05 02:44 PM

Yeah I saw that. Not sure why you would want to do that.

I'm waiting for Wine or VMWare to finish being ported over, it's already working but not finished, so that I can run a Windows program within the Mac OS like Linux users can now.

You have to love this

EFI and BIOS
Macs use an ultra-modern industry standard technology called EFI to handle booting. Sadly, Windows XP, and even the upcoming Vista, are stuck in the 1980s with old-fashioned BIOS. But with Boot Camp, the Mac can operate smoothly in both centuries.
I still need for Adobe to release their stuff for the Mactell machines before I'm getting a Mactell machine. The 17" laptops should be out this summer but the Adobe stuff is going to take longer.

It will be nice to be able to test my sites under Windows IE but I wouldn't want to actually boot into Windows at all.

swedguy 2006-04-05 03:09 PM

I was at the Apple store today and the guy there told me about it. Pretty neat.... but only thing I would use it for is to get my beloved Stats Remote :)

He also told me to send in my MacBook so they can fix the known issues like: hissing noise, messed up AirPort card and heat issue (you really burn yourself if you put it in your lap). I'm off to a great Mac start ;)

Cleo 2006-04-05 03:13 PM

There was some problems with the first version of the Mactell books and Apple has already updated their hardware to a newer design.

Swedguy I did tell you to get a PowerPC Powerbook and not one of the new Mactell books…

cd34 2006-04-05 03:41 PM

swedguy, I use a small whiteboard that I got at office depot to set my machine on. Two strips of velcro, no problem. There is also

http://www.officedepot.com/ddSKU.do?level=SK&id=924499

which is high tech, has a fan, and uses power from your USB port.

swedguy 2006-04-05 04:02 PM

Cleo, I know, I know ;) I have an early version, unfortunately. Be they will upgrade it at least.

cd34, after they change the motherboard the heat issue should be addressed. At least that's what the guy at the Apple store said. I think I might actually upgrade the thick catalog that I use right now to some type of board anyway =)

This looks much more interesting then having to reboot the Mac.
Windows Virtualization (WinXP under Mac OS X) Beta Released

You can download it here and they have lots of screen shoots too.

swedguy 2006-04-06 02:11 PM

Now THAT'S cool! I rather have that solution than a dual boot one.

Cleo 2006-04-06 02:27 PM

It does look very nice and should be fast too.

I'm still more interested in Wine since from what I understand it doesn't need Windows.

I installed this on my neighbor's Mactell 15" laptop yesterday. The whole install including installing Windows XP Pro version took under a hour. I accepted all the defaults and only had to change two afterwards. On the Virtualization software I had to tell it to use the laptop's real CD/DVD drive instead of a disk image and to use the laptop's wireless instead of the ethernet port.

It is basically just like the old VirtualPC software except it is fast, real fast. In fact faster then his PC tower that he has.

The window that it runs in resizes to whatever you set the Display control panel to in Windows XP and Windows XP works just like it would on a real PC.

Not sure how to access the right mouse click with the Mac's built-in track pad since it only has one button but there is probably a key combo given in the help files but a two button mouse works as expected. Don't get me started about Apple only putting one button on its stuff.

Just like VirtulalPC the "PC" is just a disk image so once you have everything setup the way you want you can then duplicate it in the Mac's OS for a backup. Then if your "PC" gets a virus or something you just throw this disk image away and use the clean backup. You can also have as many "PCs" running at once as you like with whatever OS you like. Also when you quit the "PC" you can save its state so next time it is ready instantly just the way you left it when you quit it.

This is fantastic software. :)

swedguy 2006-04-08 10:25 AM

SWEET!
I installed it yesterday and relized that I couldn't install XP from the CD's I got for my old win laptop (just disk images made for the laptop).
Thanks for the update, Cleo |thumb

Btw. Do you know how I can make Finder always display every folder in List or Column view? I don't like the Icon view.

swedguy 2006-04-08 10:33 AM

I finally got to try Front Row yesterday. God damn I love that thing!
Hook up the computer to the TV, then you can use the laptop remote control and watch movies, pics, trailers and listen to your favorite music. SO frickin sweet :D

Cleo 2006-04-08 10:35 AM

Go to the Finder's application menu. (The application menu is the one right next to the Apple and always shows the name of the program that you are in) Choose Preferences from it and select Open new windows in column view.

I found this page in Google that you may also find helpful
http://www.peachpit.com/articles/art...&seqNum=5&rl=1

swedguy 2006-04-08 10:42 AM

I've tried that and it opens the initial folder in column view, but then if I click on a folder within that folder, it opens it in icon view :(

EDIT:

Don't mind my dumb ass haha. Since you wrote what I had tried, I realized that I was doing something wrong. Every time I started a finder window, I clicked on "Macintosh HD" on the desktop and not the Finder icon in the dock. Now when I clicked the right one in the Dock, it opened everything in Column view ;)
THANKS! =)

Cleo 2006-04-08 11:23 AM

I don't have drives showing on my desktop but double clicking on the drive icon should give you a window with whatever the last view was. So if the last time you viewed this in column view then it should always give you column view and not an icon view.

Command N for a new Finder window when you are in the Finder. (Or just about any program)

Also windows should remember their location, size, and view. If they aren't then you need to repair disk permissions. Use Disk Utility that can be found in your Utilities folder that is in your Applications folder.

Basically the Mac stores each Finder windows preferences in its invisible .DS_Store file and sometimes things get screwy if you don't have read/write permissions for this file.

Also run this in Terminal. (Terminal can also be found in your Utilities folder.)
sudo find . -name .DS_Store -print -exec chmod 777 {} \;

I've found the above command does wonders for getting the Finder to always remember window settings but haven't needed to run it in a very long time.

swedguy 2006-04-08 12:21 PM

I got Finder to show all folders with column view now |thumb
It's too bad you can't do the same with list view, since I like that one more. If I went to one folder and selected List View, it remembered it when I went to it next time. But I was hoping that it would be smart and choose the same view for a folder within that folder... but no no =)

Simon 2006-04-08 12:24 PM

When you have a window open in the Finder, you can type command-1, command-2, and command-3 to switch from icon view to list view to column view. Makes it easy to toggle around since you'll want to see different views for different tasks.

Example: open a folder of images and type command-1 and you'll see little previews of all your images. Now type command-j and you can set the size of those previews. At 128x128 size, you can do a lot of image sorting without ever having to open an image.

swedguy 2006-04-08 02:14 PM

Nice one. Thanks Simon.
I was Googling and it seems like it's not possible to have all folders default to List View. Column View is good enough, but Icon View is just useless.

Cleo 2006-04-08 03:00 PM

Colunm view is something new that came out with Mac X. At first I didn't know what to make of it but now I love it.

Icon view is good for pic previews. Hit Command J while in icon view for view options.

Ran across this movie this morning while reading the Mac boards. It shows Windows running in a window on the Mac while installing stuff and just using Windows XP.
http://www.prodedgy.com/article/52
It really shows off just how fast this is.

I was using my neighbor's Mactell machine last night to test a bunch of my web pages in Windows and was blown away at how fast it runs even while doing stuff on the Mac at the same time. It was sweet being able to test stuff in Safari, Firefox, and Windows IE all at the same time as well as testing movies in Windows media player and QuickTime all at the same time.

swedguy 2006-04-09 10:00 AM

Time to buy a new Mac? :D

Cleo 2006-04-09 10:39 AM

Probably will once the 17" one comes out. I'm hoping that just maybe Apple will finally fucking put a two button trackpad on their laptops by then.

Sweduy I notice that my neighbor's 2 Ghz laptop get extremely hot just above the battery where the RAM chips are. Is this what your was doing before Apple replaced the mother board and is yours the 2 Ghz. model?

swedguy 2006-04-09 11:29 AM

They haven't replace mine yet. I'm going to wait and see if more issues comes up and get everything taken care of at once.

Mine is a 1.83 and it gets HOT at the same place. It also get really hot just above the left-side USB/power plug.

I'm not sure what they're thinking about with the 1 button trackapd/mouse. Thank god I have my old USB mouse with lots of buttons.

Back when I did consulting most of my accounts were design shops. You would not believe how hostile the artist/designers are to two button mice.

I have my mouse set to give additional keystrokes for the scroll and cording the two buttons so it's like having a five button mouse.

swedguy 2006-04-18 06:35 PM

It's SICK!!

You can move the mouse between the VM and the Mac seamlessly. Share clipboard and share files easily if you install Bonjour in the VM. I love it... so simple :D
A tad overkill to have a 1.5GB StatsRemote installation though ;)
