lol smart ass, i have adaware, spybot and all kind of stuff in it, they will remove it, but i dont like to run it 10 times a day, there has to be something to stop that shit

Surfn 2004-09-08 04:26 PM

It's simple and easy to stop...turn your computer off :D

Do what i am gonna do build a cheapo pc and use it just for reviewing and load the spy and virius progs on it and just reformat every once in a while.. Also I build my stuff and for friends and I have a cumputer store by my house that will sell a full install of xp home for 100.00 with a hardware pruchase and pro for 150.00 so you'll always have it to reload..

oh now talking about the pack 2, so you download it, i got lot of messages from my server about the problems you can get with the server pack 2, thats why i still didnt download it, i cant handle more shit with puters( lol spend 5 hours yesterday with my techie with my old puter which i have fucked up, i whiped out all my stuff) so you would say down load it, because till now i havent heard of anyone using xp pro who download the servers pack 2

Surfn 2004-09-08 04:47 PM

My IP warned me of possible problems which is why I hesitate to download it. I install all other updates immediately so probably no need...

abe 2004-09-08 05:30 PM

I installed sp2 a week ago and no problems so far.
I also use ZoneAlarm Pro and NAV and till now I have no crap that I know off on my PC.
From time to time I run Spybot and Adaware. But till now they only find the normal cookie stuff.
Knock wood :)

chilihost 2004-09-08 07:48 PM

Looking at this from a different view, how about suggesting to the linklist owners that they only open up submits to trusted submitters? that will cut down on the b.s. spyware and virii by 99% and will make your workload a lot lighter!

cheers,
Luke

Buy a mac

Cleo 2004-09-08 10:19 PM

Yeah buy a Mac

No viruses
No worms
No spyware

Haven't rebooted in over a year other then to install/update new software.

I just open my laptop up when I want to work and it is ready to go in under five seconds. I never mess with system crap, I just sit down and start working. I spend zero time doing any system maintenance.

I regularly keep well over fifteen programs open and multi-task doing stuff in all of them at the same time. I'm rendering vids in FCP while I'm typing this and uploading video to my server and reading mail and listening to music in iTunes.

I just don't get why anyone would use a OS that requires you to be always tweaking it, patching it, and messing with the OS instead of just using it to get work done and making money.

tiny 2004-09-08 10:32 PM

Well heres my 2 cents haha.
Get zone alarm either pro or free. Its kinda a pain til you get all the prompts of what to allow out.
Get AVG can't say enough about this program it'll block alot of shit that NAV doesn't.free is just as good as paid.
Set it to update everyday and to scan once a night when your not using puter.
http://www.grisoft.cz/us/us_avg_index.php
Get Bazzoka it'll scan you for spy and ad ware and tell you how to get rid of it
http://www.kephyr.com/spywarescanner...ource=appvisit
Next I want a all expense paid trip to your homeland haha just kiddin about that,
but someday I'd like to visit that part of the world:)

HarryM 2004-09-08 11:32 PM

software & software firewalls will only do so much, if you find yourself with a real nasty keylogger or trojan you will never know it's there. There are some that no anti virus can detect

Pornstar Dames 2004-09-08 11:51 PM

Cheaper than a mac with the same affect install Linux.

Otherwise try these should be enough

Good antivirus theres to many to mention but most of the free ones like avast and avg are actually beter than norton and the rest.

spybot search and destroy
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/
use this to imune and scan for spyware

Spyware blaster
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/
use this to immune you more from spyware

ad aware
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
use this for scanning for spyware

apart from that you can use a trojan scanner like Tauscan which is what i use or the cleaner which is pretty good to

keep all of the above updated scan once a week at least if your parinoid

of course you can use mozilla even Linux or a mac but that only protects you and you might miss something like an IE exploit or a dialler

stuveltje 2004-09-09 12:35 AM

mmmmmmmm mmmmmmm oke, well maybe a mac would be my next thing, i can work doing alot of things at the same time, some say its because i use ie as a brouwser, i have most software you all mention on the board, i have a good virusscanner who automaticly update, only with xp pro i have more trouble with shit in my puter then windows, thats one reason why i left new puter in the corner for almost 5 months. i will download the serverspack2 and check the zonealram thing. Thanks all

Kaz 2004-09-09 02:33 AM

Please be wary when downloading the Service Pack 2 for XP. I did mine a couple of weeks ago and it crashed my puter and wouldn't come back. Took a reinstall (actually it took 2 reinstalls), a severe tantrum and half a nervous breakdown before it was all working properly again. |angry|

Apparently there are some "issues" with some computers and not with others. Unfortunately mine was one with such an issue. Something to do with a conflict with the motherboard I've got which in itself is odd as I have a ms approved motherboard???

I got everything back but the time lost is a major pain in the backside. If you are going to do it make sure you've got your important stuff backed up or it might end in tears.

It's a bit like being at the casino you might win you might lose
Just passing this info on for those interested

Stu<--------*fainted* oke ackkkkkkkkk i am not gonna download servers pack 2 i dont have time for any puter trouble anymore.|violin|

Kaz 2004-09-09 03:05 AM

Sorry to weird you out Stu
I got a techie friend of mine to help me with it and he reckons that if you have XP even tho the Service Pack 2 stuffs up sometimes that you still need it for whatever fixes the boffins at MS have cooked up this time.

He eventually got the service pack onto my computer but don't ask me how cos I was a blithering heap of tear stained jeans lying crumpled in the corner. Maybe someone here might know more of the in's and out's than I do and be able to give you better advice.

Just with all the probs you are already having I didn't want you to go thru what I just went thru purely for the lost work time with all the BS that went with it. Still then again, it might not happen with your computer. It's a bit like computer Russian Roulette
|pcsucks|

Hope it all works out for you ok. I'm bloody wary of downloading any patches or critical update thingies any more |sad|
Kaz

Mishi 2004-09-09 03:19 AM

I'm running an unpatched version of XP. I have Zone Alarm (the free version) and vCom System Suite 5 running at all times. I haven't had a problem with virii or spyware in as long as I can remember (so, that's about 3 days - no, but seriously...it's been well over a year since I've had a problem). I run Spybot S&D once in a while just to be sure, but the worst it's ever found is a few SexTracker cookies and things of that nature.

If all else fails, don't |pcsucks| - ship it to me! ;)

If you go with a windows machine
do your reviews with mozzalla

Cleo 2004-09-09 12:03 PM

The new iMacs are actually faster then the 17" Powerbook that I use which has a gig of RAM but is two generations old.

The best part of a Mac is Mac OS X. The power of UNIX and the ease of a Mac.

Stuveltje if you get another Wintell machine it is going to just happen to you again. :(

Tommy 2004-09-09 12:06 PM

Cleo.....this year I was thinking about gettin a mac laptop for myself

no more towers just plug in a keyboard and mouse and use that

maybe get some sort of external harddrive for some extra file storage

When I'm home I plug a 22" monitor into its DIV port. I keep all my palets on the 17" laptop's screen and do my work on the 22" screen. Unlike the iMac or the iBooks the Powerbooks and G5s support dual monitors.

It also has USB, FireWire 400 and FireWire 800 ports so I can pretty much hook up as much storage as I want. It also has a cardbus slot and built-in Bluetooth and WiFi.

This is the somewhat newer version of what I use.

Since windows pisses me off almost once a month and I have to restore my whole system I'm definately looking for something else and I just had a first look at the powerbook and the new iMac and I think both are looking great and so do the specs.

My problem is that I never actually used a mac and over here in Europe you don't see them that much anyway. I have never seen a mac in a retailer that I know of and just looking at the price difference from US to Europe makes me going crazy...

the 17" powerbook is in the US store for $2799 and in the EU store it is for 2898 Euros which is around $3400. Come on, that is just ridiculous!

I'm happy with the perfomance of both my systems on the hardware level, the standalone is a 2000+ athlon xp and the thinkpad is a 1600 centrino but the OS which would be windows they are both running on just sucks...

I would love to try a mac but I'm not sure if I could do all with it that I do now with my windows system. Maybe I should try to find a retailer that has some and check it out. After that I would definately have to find a way to get around that european price, because that is just crappy |angry|
