My grill is a causality of the ice

I love my outside grill. Greenie's lovely wife once said, "A grill is a grill". But we know that's not quite true :) I take very good care of it and even had a custom cover made for it. We just heard a big bang and I would say that at least a 500 pound ice chunk fell off the roof and landed on the grill :(

I am almost in tears... I was going to cook a prime rib on it tonight :(

Licker4U 2007-03-02 02:58 PM

Oh man, that hurts. I couldn't live without my grill. Grilled tuna with grilled asparagus and avocado It's awesome!

conny 2007-03-02 02:59 PM

So.... you BBQ in winter ?

WOW here people would think your a nut... lol
I wish I can do BBQ in the winter damned.

Grill all year. Even today with a sheet of ice on the road and snow. At least that was the plan today :(

I loved my old charcoal blue weber grill. It finally bit the dust one day. The salty air from the ocean rusted one of the legs to the point it just gave out. Got a new one, but I do miss the old one...

Licker4U 2007-03-02 04:47 PM

LOL I went to Big Lots and got one of those $20.00 throw aways. Figured if it lasted a summer I would get my money's worth. It's three years old. :D I get around the grill and I'm like Tim Allen with a power tool. |roses|

SirMoby 2007-03-02 07:56 PM

I would be crying Jim. I love my grill.

Did you tell Greenie's wife that a pair of shoes is a fucking pair of shoes? :)

MrYum 2007-03-02 09:21 PM

Oh damn, that hurts to think about it...poor grill :(

I have a Weber Genesis that has been with me 10 years now. Whole lotta incredible steaks, burgers, ribs and other yummy stuff has been cooked on those cast iron grates |thumb

Yea...I'd be mighty upset too, would hate to lose all the incredible smells as this thing warms up, damn I feel for ya Jim :(

SirMoby 2007-03-02 09:56 PM

So Jim, what kind of grill you got?

I'm with Mr.Yum. Weber Gensis Silver

Cleo 2007-03-02 10:37 PM

How do you know that the ice weighed in at 500 pounds?

Personally I think grills are just like microwaves but a lot more hassle. A frozen dinner heated on a grill tastes just like the one heated in the microwave.

I thought guys grilled because they didn't like to clean up their mess after cooking.

Thats a sad...sad thing. I know I would be completely lost if anything happened to my grill. Having to go through a whole break in process and all. Thankfully, I don't have ice and snow problems.

oldbrad 2007-03-03 03:08 AM

lol, from the title i thought someone got a platinum grill on their teeth.

Sorry for your loss :(

It is a big ass Vermont American with all the sweet, sweet features you would ever want. The built in smoker, infared rotisserie. And I could take it to 600 degrees in 15 minutes.

All gone now... :(

And Cleo, assuming that ice is heavy, the chunk was about 3 feet by 6 feet and about 2 feet thick. How much do you think it weighed? :)

The grill has a scale :D

I used to cook outside all year round until I wised up & let The Bitch talk me into getting a big ass Weber range-top with a built in grill |thumb

Now this is the only time European metric measures are better that old style feet/pounds/pints. Because if you know the size of the ice in metres, it is supposedly easy to convert it into volume in litres or weight in kilogrammes.

But don't ask me to do it, I still work in imperial measures (British pound/feet/pints)

Yeah but aren't you a vegetarian? Vegetarian food probably does taste the same if nuked from frozen. We are talking about proper food, you know, dead things.

I know...I looked to find a formula for the weight of ice. I know a gallon of ice weighs 8.8 pounds. :) But, how big is a gallon of ice?

Would that be an American gallon or a British gallon? :)

Cleo 2007-03-03 09:18 AM

If you lived in here Florida you could just wait a short time for the ice to melt and then drink the water and go weigh yourself.

ecchi 2007-03-03 09:25 AM

Sorry Jim, you just lost my sympathy. In a desperate attempt to find something to do rather than get back to work, I just looked up your grill on Google and found it was a gas grill, not a proper one.

If you claim on your insurance, then replace it with a proper charcoal or (even better) wood burning one, then the ice did you a favour.

But if you replace it with another gas burning thing then I am going to have to have you arrested for crimes against flavour.

Remember - something died so that you could cook it on your grill, the least you can do is cook it properly.

Yeah, but doesn't melt water from acid rain give you acid indigestion? :)

Cleo 2007-03-03 09:35 AM

Back when I lived in the Latin section of Miami each holidays, seemed like each week there was a new holiday, my Cuban friends would dig a flame pit in their backyard and throw a half a pig or something dead in it, cover it with banana leaves, get really drunk, and spend the next few days eating its flesh. No grill, needed, just a shovel and something to burn.

If he lived in Florida he wouldn't have had 500 pounds of ice falling on his grill

Unless it fell from a plane but then it would more likely be a dead illegal alien or drugs falling on your grill.

I guess you could then sell the drugs to but a new grill. Not sure how much you can get for a dead illegal alien though.

docholly 2007-03-03 10:00 AM

We used to grill on Tar-Beach when I lived in the city..then the very 1st thing we bought when we moved to Las Vegas before beds etc was a big round Weber charcoal.

About 6 weeks of living here we won on labor day weekend a drawing at one of the casinos.. the top of the line Weber Gas grill.. big red one etc etc.. all our neighbors would crack up cuz i'd be outside in Dec, Jan Feb in the rain.. grilling away.

That's one of the big things I'll miss moving back to NY.

Could be dumped blue ice chunks of waste from the passing plane too.. |barf|

emmanuelle 2007-03-03 10:30 AM

1 US gallon = 231 cubic inches

your block of ice is 36 cubic feet or 62208 cubic inches
(one cubic foot = 1728 cubic inches)

/231 gives you an approximated 269.3 gallons of ice

one gallon of ice weighs 7.65 lbs (the density of ice is less than the density of water which weighs 8.35 lbs per gallon)

Therefore Jim's block of ice weighed a whopping 2060.145lbs, not accounting for temperature or errors in his measurements. ;)

I think anyone who has shovelled snow will agree that cold water is heavy stuff

True, Jim didn't actually say what color his ice was or if it had bits of corn in it. When I lived in the Keys we would always look for corn in the water before going snorkeling in case a boat had dumped its waste tank.

Jim 2007-03-03 10:50 AM

I did make a small mistake.
It is or was a Vermont Castings grill. And, it was a duel fuel type grill. Although, I only used wood chips and gas. But, if I ever wanted to, I could have used charcoal.

So I guess, at least 500 pounds would be accurate even if my measurement was a little off :)

Even worse, I have a block about twice the size hanging over an enclosed porch roof :) We have blocked the area from the dogs and moved our birds for the crash. I would go out and hit it with an sledge hammer but I am afraid of the thing falling on me :)

Much better to bring that thing down under controlled (and safer) conditions. If you wait much longer, the thaw will bring it down, which won't be pretty if the mailman happens to be under it.

Why anyone would choose to live where they have to worry about 2000 pound chunks of ice falling off of their roof baffles the fuck out of me|huh

I agree 100%! All we have to worry about is a little "blow" every now and then |hurricane And in the wintertime we don't have to cuy holes in ice to go fishing :D And I agree, charcoal is the only way to go...
