Shits & Giggles - back in 96, it was just a hobby for me :)

Cleo 2003-09-09 09:24 AM

I was publishing swinger and escorts magazines and the internet was killing the magazine business. I already know how to write html, but not much else, then I was injured pretty badly. During my recovery I started reading the webmaster boards and thought this looks like a good way to make some money.

I was lucky and had some great guidance from people like the GreenGuy. |smooch| Once the checks started coming in I sold off my publishing business and went full time doing this.

I'm still involved with a few other businesses, but this is my full time occupation.

Ramster 2003-09-09 10:02 AM

I haven't a clue really. Curiosity I guess.

I thought this was cool and that maybe I could make some money. I had a guy working for me who had a gaming site online and he showed me free hosts and that I get free content so I built some sites (I knew nothing even about html really then). After a few months and maybe 3 free sites out there I did nothing else untill I got a $29 check from BA so then I started doing more.

That said it's been about 1 year since I went fulltime in this biz and I love it. :)

iSC_Paul 2003-09-09 10:40 AM

For me it started off as a curiosity thing until I got my first check from Moneytree (1999 i think) and it became a source of extra money. It quickly developed into a full time job |rasta| . Boy, those years sure fly in this biz |juggle|

I've always wanted to write, direct, produce my own brand of adult movies.

I was running a family glazing business and hated every minute. What I wanted to do was manage one of 4 strip bars but we already had managers. For several years I wrote screenplays in my spare time and saw some shorts produced on channel 4 here in the UK. I wanted out of the glazing biz, so I pissed everyone off and sold it for a lot less than it was worth to a well-known UK glazing firm that was expanding into my area. Gave a feature screenplay to a friend who owns a film production firm and he's actually shooting that between now and oct/nov. A year ago, he promised I'd make about 20 grand from it at best. He only makes horror movies and I needed more money, so I thought I'd setup a paysite for the bars.

Cut a long story short . . . I didn't get the go-ahead to promote the bars, so set on a plan to learn the online adult industry. It seemed - and still is - an expanding market. It was also a way for me to learn the adult biz - all aspects. I'd learned html to make a mainstream site for my glazing firm. I thought I could develop an online adult enterprise, meet adult movie producers in the future, and eventually put some cash into a low-budet production company of my own.

That's me :)

I needed to earn money without leaving the house. The Internet was the only way I could do this. And online porn had more traffic than anything else.

Torn Rose 2003-09-09 11:29 AM

My Wife and I was already "Swingers" for a few years and had been taking pics and videos of each other for a few years, than we saw Beckalynn on Oprah about 4 years ago and that's when we realized that the "amateur" sites were really "Amateurs" and not something some marketing guru made up.

We had a pc already but we wasn’t ever really big into surfing porn, so we wrote another webmaster and asked questions, and decided "why not"

Been online for almost 4 years and "full time" well over a year.

Would never go back.

Wow... That's a great and compassionate reason Sarah - Your husband must be greatful!

For me, I got introduced to the whole thing about 5 years ago by a friend, who at that time had a movie list site and was cranking out TGP galleries.

That got me interested, as it was something that I could do out of the house, and at the time I didn't have a job (Fresh out of college)

After a while though, it got pretty lonely working at home, so I moved on and got an office with my business partner and started working on our own program. And now, here we are |shake|

Okay, no, nevermind, the trainspotting quotes won't do it.

In a word, money. Actually being able to turn a collection of things I have enjoyed in the past (computers, porn, marketting, networking, etc) into cubic dollars. Being able to work from home, and not have to do the office thing...

I'd been involved with the Internet when people didn't know there was email. I had some close friends that always wanted to get into this biz and they were always on my ass about it.

Under total peer pressure I started working with them. They realised it was work and not all fun. I started making daily sales from my first AVS site.

I stuck with it and they quit.

I have a better job then they do. |pokefun|

Surfn 2003-09-09 01:38 PM

I was working and making good money on the non-adult side. Then in 95 I went through a nasty bitter divorce that took most of my money so I came over to the adult side to try and recoup some of my losses. I did in the first few months and stayed mainly on the adult side ever since. |bananna| |bananna| |bananna|

I still do systems analysis for a select few clients that I have been consulting to since the early 80’s. |shake|

A friend of mine started out about a year before me doing gay sites. I laughed a lot at him because the general oppinion in Demark is "why pay for something you can get for free?". But after he had been doing it for a year he showed me the 6 grand he had just casually thrown into a drawer I say... "ME TOO" :D

And here I am 3 years later looking a big tits every day...

For those of you that have not noticed I have a few 'quirks' (yes it is more than just a nick) that seem to keep me from holding a steady job(or maybe I am just a lazy S.O.B.). So after working more jobs than years I had been alive I came to the conclusion that I would have to make money some other way. So here I am. |rasta|

Porn addict. Even if I wasnt a webmaster, I'd still be looking at porn everyday.

Linkster 2003-09-09 05:27 PM

Started out with adult BBS's in the 80s...when Holo and a few other systems came along and graphic interfaces started appearing I missed the reality of how fast it would explode so I was content selling little memberships to my BBS's. Once the BBS software had been ported over to the internet, I lost total interest in the biz....did some contracting...but kept a finger on the biz...bought and sold some domains, played the web sorta like a stock market...then in 99 decided that the easy ride was over....and started building really bad avs sites. Couldnt get them listed half the time so decided I would build a LL. That seemed to have been halfway successful so expanded to TGPs and a few other traffic sources (trying to learn as much as I could about SEs) and now still expanding the little empire. Oh yeah...talking with and meeting really successful people in the biz (and listening sometimes LOL) got through the thick-headed pre-conceptions I had and helped me expand by leaps and bounds.

DangerDave 2003-09-09 06:05 PM

There weren't many sites sites in my niche, so I put up a site for fun... made 25$ the first week.. and the rest is history..

I had waited tables for ten years and was miserable. I hated every single person I was depressed and it was starting to effect the rest of my life. Then one night I was talking to someone in an aol chat room about movies and he mentioned he was doing free istes and making really good money. He pointed me towrds the newbie boards and its been 4 years this month:) Ive never made as much money and i love having a flexble schedule. Funny though my pal who got me started in this has dropped out and I keep on going:)

Bill 2003-09-09 07:15 PM

I was sysop of a bbs in the early nineties. Then the internet ended bbs's. I've been totally selfemployed for a while, after the bbs ended I was doing a small business mangement consulting company that included doing the early style "advertise your business" websites.

Then a friend of mine who owned a strip club asked me to look at doing ultravid video streaming from his club. This was fall of 1997. I spent 98 trying various net ventures, ending with a small paysite, losing money all the way (because of my total ignorance of how net business worked) and bickering with my strip club friend. Got disgusted and gave up on that.

Then in 99 I decided I could do the affiliate thing all by myself, a one man operation. I was sick of my other businesses, actually sick to death of dealing with clients in any form. And I had a little money to live on so I threw myself into it working and studying this business full time.

It was slow going at first, but by the end of 99 I was making enough money to live off of, which I thought was damn cool. Now I do fairly well. I like this business, and I could happily do it untill I'm too old to do anything.

So, the reason "Why" I got into this business is I really, REALLY wanted to make money without ever having to listen to another sniveling, chiseling client ever again in my life.

My biggest regret is that I didn't start right into this after I closed down my bbs. But, the affiliate model of this biz didn't exist then...

Keep building and once you make enough you can go to the Bunny Ranch or one of those escort services out of Texas I think it is. Or I think Pornkings is giving away trips to the Bunny Ranch. |jester|

Interesting stories!

I've always been involved with the internet in one shape or another. (trying to run different types of sites from music reviews to web design...)
Always had an interest in this business, and I tried my hand at it (no pun intended!!) back in '99...
Ever since then, it's been great!

I started 1998 because I had nothing to do - I had sold my real life businesses couple of years before and didn't want to start new ones.

I have always wanted to work from home. I tried to think ways to do it back in the 80's when I bought Amiga computer, first one with capacity to show real photos. Unfortunately no net back then.

We built a new PC 1998, bought 56k modem, and rest is history. I started with free hosts, change to paid hosting late 1999 and here I'm still. I know I'm doing this as long as I'm here. At last I can work from home, that's something I have always wanted to do. |bananna|

We were stationed in Naples Italy and in order for me to work i'd have to be a resident for 1 yr and obtain a work visa.. it was just easier to turn my cam on and shake my ass..

after moving back stateside..where i could work, i switched sides to promote cam girls instead of my old phat ass being one.. hooked up with Tart who builds awesome graphics.. and we are now ever evolving..

started out two days after i got my connection to the internet (yeah i didnt sleep for 48 hours and surfed my butt off:D) well accidentaly i ran into a dutch webmaster site and started reading shit.
When my mom got ill in late september 2001 i saw this as a great way of getting my mind of the shit i and my mom were experiecing in the hoispital (she had cancer and was waiting for her death) plus it allowed me to be more flexible with visiting my mom instead of having a full time job.
This was the best choice i ever made in my live.
Not only did i manage to spend the most of my timne with my mom trying to make thing easier for her (like you can) it also gave me a good start for my porn biz. so for me it was kinda a win win situation....

digifan 2003-09-10 12:30 PM

That's the only way left for me to take care of my mom having cancer (brain tumor) 24/7 and to make some $$$.

The funny thing is that before I started in this biz, I saw a show on Jerry Springer with some male/female webmasters on it saying how much money they make in this biz, I didn't believe it at all untill I tried |bow|

Back in 97 I was curious why there are so many XPics banners all over the place, so I started sniffing around and found the reason. They paid 18 cents per click. It was a good start.
But I quit like 4 years ago, and now what I do is just design biz.. |waves|

well actually, in dec '98 they(govt) wanted me to work for $1.5/hr or something for it. I thought fuck that and started making crap sites and actually started making money after a few months having learnt about avs sites wasnt long before iwas making more than i'd seen in my life.. ahh the good ol' days :-)

Poppy 2003-09-14 02:09 PM

Well Adam, I joined because of the potential to make good $$$, the openmindedness (is that a word?) of the industry, and to become a part of history.

The internet is the fastet growing medium since radio and television and I wanted to be a part of this and the cutting edge technology that adult utilizes.

dareutwo 2003-09-14 06:41 PM

I actually backed into this biz -
Was selling cars (and had for years). This Internet thing pops up - so I decide to check it out. Had a direct line to the heads of Autobytel back in the day to help with selling cars online.
My store didn't have a website and they wouldn't pay to build one. So I went searching on How to Build one on my own. In about 20 seconds I was reading a Netpond thread.
And since my office was closest to the door, and furthest away from the managers, I took the liberty of pursuing this further.

Though I still think KK or one of you people I know paid for my 1st sale :)
(condomfh - no less)

For quite few years it was simply a hobby that paid for vacations, TV's and stuff like that.

Now it pays the bills.

...those were the days... I think even Private Gold used to pay 0.12 per click back then...

I came to this by pure curiosity: I was online from late 1995 onwards; that a friend was involved in the start-up of the first local ISP certainly helped.
In 1996/7 I had a site up (more for fun and learning) linking to resources (like HTML tutorials and free web graphics) and offering free fonts. I earned a few decent rewards with it but never got past 360 hits a day.
So one day in mid 1997 I made a series gallery from collected pictures on Geocities and submitted it to TheHun: it got over 7,600 hits in just over 4 or 5 hours until Geocities took it down (of course - I had actually expected this). This showed me where the traffic was!
I never managed to get any employment after I moved from Europe to Australia, and my savings were dwindling away, so in a way I was keen for some extra income, too!
So when the first free adult servers came up in late 1997/early 1998 I was one of the first to take advantage of their offer: 2 mb of storage(!!) for a free adult site. Then in March 1998 fsn.net was offering free sub-domains with 5 (or was it 10) mb, it was a stinker of a day, so on the spirit of the moment TropicHeat.fsn.net was born...

Stupid me (not really - it was fun!) went travelling in late 1999 when the boom really started and somehow I never managed to get the same foodhold ever since. Only the last 5-6 months have I've been doing this almost fulltime, but the income is nothing compared to what it used to be back in 1999.
