Foreign Traffic Redirects? Good, Bad, Indifferent?

I signed up for Sex Money and installed their foreign redirect on a few of my domains where I get considerable foreign traffic, (Never really could convert it well), and was wondering if anyone else had experience, thoughts, opinons, and/or questions about doing this.

I'm using their .htaccess redirect for 2 domains and it seems to be working (making a few extra dollars, not huge, but hasn't decreased earnings on those domains).

Greenguy 2003-09-12 10:32 AM

I made the mistake of trying SexMoney in the htaccess on link-o-rama.com - I was flooded with emails & posts that my site was hi-jacked - LOL

I do of course still use SexMoney & ARS's Dialer to redirect some foreign traffic on a few domains & sites, but I get in too much trouble if I do it on the big one :D

I think that the only way this should be done is if you are using a banner rotator like PhpAdsNew that has the option to serve up different banners to foreign traffic.

EclectiXXX -

Hey you... long time no see! |waves|

The re-direct feature is a nice way to simply send off non-English speaking traffic to sponsors.... but it's not for everyone. Just like not everybody can convert TGP traffic - or not everyone can convert the same niches well - there are different methods for everyone's "madness" when it comes to global traffic.

Re-direction is just ONE of the ways to work with SexMoney...

Another way - the way I actually prefer - is to use targeted banners. We just sent out a PR yesterday (and it will be in our webmasters mailer this week) about the new multi-language banners that we've added to the program. We also have multi-niche targeted banners, banners for specific sites - and generic banners that can be used anywhere.

Another way that works well for some - and I think this is what Greenie is using now (at least last time I checked) is through text links. Yup.. text links still work wonders. We have a full list of 25 different language specific text links that you can use on your site if there is a specific language(s) that you want to address.

Shoot me an email - contact me by ICQ (29052013 - I lost you off my list somehow!) - or get in touch with Chipmunk (above). We can take a look at your traffic & account and help you tailor your links to better suit your needs... translation... make you mo $$$$$ |smooch|

Hope to hear from ya.... will you be heading to Internext this year? LMK - it's been a long time since we've seen you.

EclectiXXX 2003-09-12 12:21 PM

I do use PHPAdsNew but not yet on these 2 domains...

I've also not figured out how to get the geo tracking part working though...

Just an FYI I looked at my Sex Money stats and I get way more traffic from "unproductive for me" countries (Poland Turkey Hungary Russia Romania, etc) than I thought!!! Damn freeloaders!!!!

Cleo 2003-09-12 01:01 PM

I haven't actually gotten around to setting it up, it is on my long list and projects that I want to do.

From what I understand you just need to subscribe to the Geo database, $150 a year, and then under the delivery tab tell it which banners to serve where.

The main reason that I haven't gotten around to doing this is having to add in a bunch of banners in languages that I don't understand not to mention finding sponsors that offer these banners.

shelmal 2003-09-12 01:32 PM

Ok this may be a stupid question but I had considered using them fpr my tgp galleries BUT won't the tgps consider this as redirection and ban me?

turboface 2003-09-12 03:44 PM

I started using Sex Money a month or so ago, but stopped sending traffic to them after I never got a response to a few emails I sent them about some problems I was having with their stats.

DangerDave 2003-09-12 05:59 PM

I for one get pissed off with this "foreign traffic" shit..

I want to know what the current definition of "foreign traffic" is??.

Anything that isnt US??
Anything that doesnt speak english??

I get redirected enuff as it is, being non-us based... |pissed|

Bear in mind that many tgps with large quantities of "money making" traffic are owned / reviewed by ppl who don't reside in the US or Canada. Running any kind of geo targetting on gals wouldn't be advisable...

Well one thing is for sure :)
Sweden should not be counted as a foregin traffic source, we spek farely good english and have loads of CC's and most important of all we are not afraid to use them online(have seen statistics on this) acording to statistics Sweden is in the top3 of online CC shopping when you see to the % of people in the country. So dont redirect Swedes :)

Yooo GG, why people had problems with the .htaccess from sexmoney on LOR is cause it redirected all of us webmasters that wanted to submit sites to you to sexmoney.......|sad|
Dont get any ideas :D

I redirect the far east and the eastern europeans. I can understand your frustration with webmasters that do blank redirects though, that's |bullshit|

MikeC 2003-09-13 09:48 PM

If you redirect foreign traffic do you run the risk of getting grey-barred by Google for cloaking or something similar?

Linkster 2003-09-14 09:20 PM

MikeC...real good observation...I for one don't know how the SEs look at geo-targetting in the htaccess, but it sure would seem that that would be a form of cloaking by definition....
of course doing what GG is doing with the text links would be the sensible way to handle that problem

Turboface - if you are still interested, please drop me an email via kath@sexmoney.com or contact me via ICQ at 29052013. In the past month we have totally re-done our statistics areas, adding even more stats opportunities and ways to track your traffic.

I apologize for whomever dropped the ball - I can assure you that's not typical of our team. We really enjoy contacting our webmasters on a personal basis via email, ICQ or on the phone to help them better target their traffic for the maximum results.

I hope to hear from you soon. |waves|

Hey Dave! |smooch|

The current definition of "foreign traffic" depends totally upon the webmaster. Not speaking for other global traffic programs, but SexMoney.com lets the webmaster choose which languages he wants to re-direct or include in his geo-targeting links.

Our program has a double filtering process that checks the user by browser language AND by IP-detection/location. This helps if you are targeting French-speaking users but want to discern between French-speaking Canadians and French-speaking Parisians. You choose which languages you want to send to SexMoney and which ones you want to keep.

And as far as the whole "re-direction" thing goes... I agree with Linkster - what Greenguy is doing now with the text link offerings in multiple languages is the BEST solution. Give your surfers the choice. I don't like getting re-directed (I hear ya Dave!) so I'm sure they don't getting taken somewhere against their will. lol

In the coming weeks we will have even more targeting tools, ads and multi-language offerings for webmasters to use on their sites in RESPONSE to requests made by webmasters who work with link list, TGP and search engine traffic, who want to stay complaint with rules and requirements AND make some $$$ from their global traffic.

I hope this answers some questions - if you have more, my virtual door is always open. Get me via kath@sexmoney.com or ICQ at 29052013. |rasta|

Exactly Linkster. My site gets well over 30 million pageviews a month (of which probably close to a third is foreign), but I wouldn't touch redirecting with a ten foot pole if it meant even the slightest chance of losing my Google traffic. Changing my personal advertisements based on browser language might not be a bad idea though. Anybody with any thoughts on how to go about easily implementing such a system?

Kath 2003-09-15 10:41 PM

MikeC -

I think we have something that would be perfect for your needs. Shoot me an ICQ via 29052013 or email me via kath@sexmoney.com.

I also want to take a moment to thank all the webmasters from this board who have been contacting me by email and ICQ ever since we launched our ad campaign here @ GreenguyandJim.com. We've received some of the most helpful and constructive comments from this bunch than anywhere else on the 'Net.

Greenguy & Jim sure know how to attract a good bunch! |jackinthe
