Words Hurt

(I couldn't think of a better title.)

I have been reading and listening to a lot of things about "cancel culture" and "outrage culture," and what I have learned is that people are no longer allowed to grow or have a change of opinion, and that apologies are bloody pointless.

Look at the reaction to Liam Neeson's confession about his long-ago (temporary) feelings towards black men after his friend was raped. He expressed disgust about his feelings and can't even imagine feeling that way, but these fucking kids today tear him apart. Wait - the man admits to feeling one way a long time ago, states that it's wrong, and NOW, even though it never effected a single goddamn person, he should be destroyed?

Comedians, obviously, have been targeted very heavily due to their offensive jokes. Offensive jokes are like peanut butter. They may make you sick, but I can eat them all day. There are comedians I enjoy who sometimes say shit I don't like, but I don't think they need to be homeless for upsetting my delicate nature. And why the FUCK should a comic be torn apart today for jokes that were fine years ago? Culture changes and people change. People fucking grow. Sarah Silverman (sexy jew!) used to use the word 'faggot' and even defended the use of it. Now, she thinks it's terrible. Is she to be marched naked through the streets? Yes, but only because she's sexy - not because of past material.

I can't remember where, but I read a comment about how liberals, and I am one, believe that murderers should be rehabilitated, but people who say hurtful words should be publicly lynched.

I'm a tree hugging libtard as well & the "words hurt" shit drives me up the fucking wall, ESPECIALLY with comedians. The last Ricky Gervais special on Netflix covered this topic a lot. One part was about someone asking him if any topics were off limits & he said no. The person asked if that included rape & he told this joke (paraphrasing):

Woman runs into a police station & screams "HELP! HELP! I'VE BEEN GRAPED!!" A cop looks at her & asks "Do you mean raped?". The woman replied "No, there were a bunch of them."

I'm sorry, but that's a funny rape joke|lol|

Side Note: I still wear this shirt all the time |thumb

I'm with the both of you on this as well.

I couldn't find it but I use to have a meme on my phone that said something to likes of: If I offended you blame your parents for raising a pussy!

You won't be surprised when I say I offended a couple of people showing them that meme |banghead|

All this politically correct bullshit is driving me nuts too. You (well, people in the spotlight at least) have to watch what they're saying constantly. No matter what you say or do there will always be someone or some group that suddenly feels offended. Get over it wankers! (I apologize to all those who masturbate once in a while)

It's actually one of the reasons I chose to leave the US, Useless. That movement has been groiwn steadily for years. I remember one Christmas season at Lucent, where we were told we could not use certain colors (they might offend), we could not have any angels as decorations, nor coule we even have a group tree. The list was totally ridiculous. We wanted to incorporate something from each of our cultures but was told no - someone would get offended. My gosh.. we might have learned something about Hannukah or Kwanza!! We just might.. have enjoyed it!! Since when did it become bad to be different? Or have a different viewpoint? I don't have to agree with you to respect you but I guess these days, I am no longer allowed to do that.

People do make mistakes, and hopefully they grow from them. Liam Neeson is extremely brave for saying anything, and has my respect as someone who made a mistake and grew from it.

Maybe I should move to Finland as well? Because what is discussed in this thread applies to Norway as well. Ok, not as bad as in US, but still ...

This picture ain't funny, because it's true |lol||lol||lol|

I should point out that joke is probably not funny if you've been raped, because I cringe at suicide & some cancer jokes now (there's one that I used to reference anytime that type of cancer came up or the name of the celeb that had it was mentioned, that I won't even allow myself to post out in the open - I literally can't bring myself to type the words). Point is I'm not out leading a crusade against those type of jokes. They're not funny to me & that's about it.

I am not the same man I was when I was 20. Judge a person based on who they are now and not who they were decades ago. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh is a good example. Senators should have voted against him because of the views he holds and not what he did in college.

How he responded to that bothered me far more than the accusations themselves.

I never read anything in school about having a right to not be offended.

I can understand corporations avoiding such things, in this age of social media viral calls for boycotts. Controversy of any kind is bad for business, even if it's total BS.

Don't get me wrong here - we are facing some serious issues having to do with the wave of immigrants and a small country that has been pretty much homogenized for so many generations. Those issues will resolve in time as the locals get used to the newcomers and the newcomers settle in, learn the language and start their lives over again. At least both sides appear to be making some progress with growing.

The Me Too stuff has also briefly surfaced but much of it has been waved off as mistakes made in the past. There is a bit of it going around Pariliament but that is about it, thankfully. They even forgave Matti Nykänen for all his capers and will be giving him a state funeral.

Be careful using the lynch word. Somehow people will think it applies to them and call the police.

Its a fairly pathetic world in the west. It can be pathetic here but in different ways.

Free Speech, to paraphrase Bush the lesser's AG, Alberto Gonzalez, "What a quaint idea".
