Farewell, Men's Magazines!

http://www.xbiz.com/news/115242?ln=web

Porn is a staple in the Internet, and its continued patronage from their desired demographic is almost always assured. But the current situation of its printed counterpart is anything but rosy.

As Stephen Yagielowicz relates in his article, men's cinsumer magazines and even the hardcore male magazines are facing tougher times. With the advent of the internet, the newsstands had to take a backseat to the flashier medium. Sales have dropped significantly that newsstands are now thinking of dropping them altogether.

The article is a quick but sobering look into the publishing world of men's magazines. The publishing industry took a hard blow from rise of the Internet. And the changes it has wrought may be irrevocable.
I find it strange, however, that despite how sad state of affairs, I still feel ambivalent over this.

Print is dead, long live magazines.

Damn

I liked loitering at the 7/11 and reading those.

I’m with ya!

I personally will miss the insightful articles and thought provoking text that could only be delivered through the pages of Heavy Hangers magazine.

Yep, not to mention the fantastic Kilgore Trout science fiction pieces mixed in between artistic split beaver shots.

I always hated the way the pages stick together after you look at them a few times.

In Hustler we always looked forward to the cartoon about the older couple. I'll be damned if I can think of their names right now, neither can hubby.

Funny how we used to crack up to them when first started reading the magazine now we can relate...|jester|

I can't help but wondering exactly "how dead" print truly is. I mean, there's nothing quite like having a magazine in your hands to flip through - men's, women's, hobby/interest-based or whatever. Great for when you can't be online or just to look through the pictures and ads in-print - faster info is great, but even the Internet can't be all things to all people.

I've noticed that rather than rolling over and dying at the first call of "print is dead" that a lot of publications have made changes/improvements and made subscription costs lower, adding more advertisements and more online interactivity, printable online items and more. I don't know that I'd start playing taps or not yet - even for men's magazines. I think it's just time for a change.

I was involved in print publishing before getting into this biz. It's expensive doing print and I just don't see it surviving due to costs just like the way CDs have all but died.

Just as MP3 players have replaced CDs electronic book readers will replace print.

Rising overhead, the price of paper, the immediacy and availability of porn in the net as well and the changing tastes of the readng public is what is slowly killing men's porn magazines.

It's Not Just Magazines Though. I Remember Hearing About Several Major Newspapers Considering A Changeover To Internet Only Instead Of Print. The Boston Globe Was Mentioned As One Possible Candidate For The Switch.

The one thing that caught my ear in that video is when the narrator mentioned the student would still have the notes they make "even after the book has expired." So I guess one new thing to look forward to will be books with expiration dates. Maybe they'll come up with monthly-recurring library memberships that you can't cancel unless you want all your books to disappear off your tablet or other device's drive. And then books will get pirated too, maybe leading to kids actually wanting to read and sharing 'read lists' of cracked books they can share with their friends.

Wow...maybe there will even be 'illegal' book tube sites one day!

:D

Yeah that caught my attention too. That along with all the menus and calendar being Apple stuff.

The demo looks very much like the one that Sports Illustrated did.

I'm guessing it will be done like movie rentals are done in that you will have a choice of renting or for a bit more money buying.

Without the cost of printing stuff it should open up publishing to smaller nice indie stuff. Who knows... maybe even Omni magazine will get reborn.

It's looking like the electronic magazines of the future won't look all that different from today's printed magazines except that they will be animated and not actually printed.

LG shows 19-inch flexible e-paper prototype. I guess you would carry it rolled up like an ancient scroll.

I no longer grab a magazine or book when I take my afternoon break on the toilet. I have an ebook reader on my iPhone and am working my way through several novels.
