Have a quick question

Hi all |waves|

Is it normal for a hosting company to go down for a while?

If it is, it sure is disruptive. :(

Not really....most have some down time, I think like less than 1%. But if it happens frequently I would look for another webhost. How long has it been? Just curious

tjchuck 2005-03-15 12:18 PM

I checked at about 9 my time which is 11 here and it has been down for at least that long.
I actually can't contact them, cause it is showing DNS error.

Presmar 2005-03-15 12:27 PM

I would find another host. Save yourself a lot of headache down the road. My site rarley goes down and if it does it's back online within minutes. I use one-hosting.com

It's worked out good for me

good luck

Thanks Presmar

Which host is it tjchuck?

tjchuck 2005-03-15 01:01 PM

It is Servage.net Jim

Every host goes down - anyone that says they have 100% uptime is lying. Think of it this way - can you guarantee that the computer your on will still be working in 8 hours? That it won't need a reboot? That the bandwidth provider will be operational? It's not a perfect world - if it was, it'd only rain at night :D

Have you had any contact with them as far as why they're down?

Nothing scarier than when your sites go down |angry| All hosts run into problems - but when the problems occur rather frequently you should consider moving.

tjchuck 2005-03-15 01:11 PM

No I haven't had contact.

And I understand that it is not a perfect world, but as I said earlier it is sure disruptive. A guy works hard to get on lists and then you get listed and your sites are down.

cd34 2005-03-15 01:17 PM

drops off the face of the earth after level3 hands it to glbx.net.

100% uptime is attainable. It is just very expensive. Most people only strive for 5 9s anyhow, 99.999%, which allows about 5 minutes of downtime per year.

Put another way, a 99.9% uptime guarantee gives a company 525 minutes/year of unplanned outages.

However, the outage appears to be more than just servage.net, so, there are probably many many hands running around to fix it.

Cleo 2005-03-15 01:19 PM

With a good host it is rare.

I'm with a good host but it I was down last week when the city where my host is located got a bad storm that knocked out the whole city so I was down for a around 3 hours.

Server problems suck big green slimy donkey dicks and hurts your listings too.

tjchuck 2005-03-15 01:20 PM

So what does a guy do in this situation? And not just speaking in terms of me, I mean generally what do you guys do?

Dude...find another host..I can't even find a phone number for these guys

tjchuck 2005-03-15 01:23 PM

Sorry

Not just guys, girls, peoples, others ;)

Cleo 2005-03-15 01:23 PM

If I don't feel comfortable with a host's level of service then I find a new host. Personally I like the one in my sig.

tjchuck 2005-03-15 01:25 PM

Thanks Cleo
But what about all the link lists that your sites are on. Do you contact them?

Cleo 2005-03-15 01:29 PM

Are you still down?

ReverendSassy 2005-03-15 01:30 PM

Ya that isn't good that they've been down that long I use Powerstorm Hosting http://www.powerstorm.net/cgi-bin/cl...=reverendsassy and can't honestly remember the last time that my site went down They have AWESOME customer service too So give them a hollar :)

tjchuck 2005-03-15 01:33 PM

I am still down and when you go to servage.net you get cannot find server or dns server error

tjchuck 2005-03-15 01:40 PM

Here's a good place to hunt for hosting: http://www.findmyhosting.com/

However, if you read cd34's post again he pointed out that it isn't your host's fault. The outage is larger than that. Chances are, by the time you pick a new host, your old one will be back up. It's best to change hosts due to how they perform when they are up and running, not when the situation is out of their hands.

If you are a free site builder, announce your URLs in the link list forum and explain that your host is currently down. That's about all you can do.

tjchuck 2005-03-15 01:43 PM

Thanks UW
Will do!

Head Boy 2005-03-15 01:47 PM

Some hosts always seem to be having problems, and some seem to be pretty stable.

A while ago I had an outage with a reliable host when a back hoe cut through three of the cables into the building. They managed to get back on in an hour or two by doing a deal with AOL who had a spare cable at the other end of the building. I bet AOL stitched them up for that.

WEBAIR 2005-03-15 01:49 PM

tjchuck if your still down feel free to contact me I'll set you up a nioce deal
