thoughts on image h1

what do you think?

h1textgoeshere

trying this is so the surfer sees the image but the spiders will see an h1 tag.

Generally it isn't a good idea to have a bunch of h1 tags on a page.

Why not just use the alt tag?

yeah just once on the page. because i do the title on the top of the page as an image i was thinking i need to get an h1 tag on there but the image alone doesn't mean shit i don't think. or will the h1 tag on an image pull the alt info?

Seems like Google might think that us shady to do, not sure though.

On my redesign of my LL I simply put the page title in a h1 tag below the header.

Like on this page.

yeah, im not sure how google will feel?? thats kinda what im wondering. the problem with doing it like you did is because im on a galllery page and the title image is the words i want in the h1 tag, so then i would have the words visible to user two times on the page and it would look stupid.

I've used this method on countless mainstream sites and all has worked out well with Google - they don't seem to mind this

If an image is replacing the H1 text, I use it on the image, otherwise I I just use the alt tag.

so are you saying that se will see the alt text of image as the words for the h1 tag?

I would never assume to know anything about SE - just make my best stab at it ;)

Not certain I see the rationale, whereas the h1 tag certainly header or title info, the alt tag describes the pic. Personally I'd want to keep my image in regular mark up, image search is a powerful thing.

Yeah, but it is unlikely anyone using image search will go to a page because of a text header image, they want porn not words.

I am in the process of updating a very old (mostly non adult) link list. I used an old trick on a new ad which may solve your problem. Take a look at the yellow "Make Money" ad on the top of the right hand column at
http://ecroydon.com/
The yellow blob is a table background, the text is real text. it is done like this:
Code:

Could you do the same thing? Make your logo and background as a graphic, display it as a background in a table, then add your H1 text as actual text in the table?

Sorry just realised that was a rather messy example. A classier one is the advert column (second column) on this site:
http://football-fan-site.info/
(The white box with the blue/aqua border is a background image.)

And my favourite is the index on this site:
http://www.alien-ufo.info/
(The pictures of the earth are background images, and so are the green boxes with the blue borders that are under the adverts.)

the image is text of the words so to show the image and the words looks cheesy cause it just says the same thing twice.

What I mean is redo the graphic without the words, so you just have the background, then overlay the text using tables. Unless you have some really weird font, you should be able to re-imagine the text using style.
