A new kid, er search engine, in town

Some ex-google engineers have created their own search engine:

It looks cool, but is a bit slow loading for my tastes!

Greenguy 2008-07-28 11:00 AM

I did a search for "greenguy" Oddly enough, they have both my index & main page listed...like Google.

One result is titled "Site Banned For Spam - web hosting, ecommerce web ..."

Two are titled "phpBB : Critical Error"

One is a legit recycling website

The other 4 are total |spam|

Yeah, they're good |thumb

Greenguy 2008-07-28 11:09 AM

Oops! I just noticed that "Safe Search" was on, which means their filter missed my title:
Free Porn Sites, Free Porn Links and XXX ...

When I went back to the search results to verify that my dirty porn site was there, I noticed that the results were different. So I hit reload & got this:
We didn’t find any results for “greenguy”
Some reasons might be...
- a typo. Please check your spelling.
- your search includes a term that is very rare. Try to find a more common substitute.
- too many search terms. Please try fewer terms.
Finally, try to think of different words to describe your search.

I then hit search again & 1 result came back....some |spam| site

4 years & $33 mil to develop this? YIKES!

Greenguy 2008-07-28 11:15 AM

This place gets worse & worse:
XM Radio - 600,000 results
Delphi Xm Radio - 1.2 mil results

How can you have more results when you narrow the search with more keywords?!?!?!?!

Google shows 4.2 mil & 123,000 respectively.

I know why they are EX-engineers.. because they are crap!!!

Search - dangerdave = just about all wordlist spammers

Back to the drawing board guys..

I saw Cuil on Google trends so I clicked & read a few articles, like this one - lol

Google (GOOG) has a new rival, Cuil. Out of the box, it seems hopelessly broken....

There was talk some years ago about some algorithm being developed by some Russian developers that was meant to search like google, just way more efficiently. I can only assume it died out because I haven't heard anything since.

Maybe Google bought him and/or his project before it went live.
They are buying everything that has potential.Three years ago they bought small Voip company located in Florida that supposed to be next Skype. It turns out that over 800 million $ were spend for nothing. And my 5000 shares of this company dropped down to zero right after Google take over. |cry|

justbondage 2008-07-29 01:31 AM

Very possible! Unlucky about your shares! You would have thought with google buying them they would have increased 10 fold!

Cuil - New search engine looking a mess

I'm sure this will improve over time. Hopefully anyway. I'm not to pleased on my search results for my keywords, sites, etc.

Comical "free porn" Google vs. Cuil search:

they are a group of 30, most of them are ex-google employees, with the help of some Venture Capitalists, they have started it. i browsed through it... and i found it to be good. i wanted to know about their crawler/spider... wrote to them but its now 3 weeks, they havent replied

Greenguy 2008-08-27 02:16 PM

I went & looked again last week & from what I see, it's still a mess.

There's a reason these people are no longer with Google.

Search for " free porn" I had great results :

-National Vietnam Veterans Art Museum
-HackeD By Snipers TeaM
-Sudden Launch - Because You Like Free Message Boards.
-HOW TO USE THIS WEB SITE | SNOWBOARD MAGAZINE
-How to Manage Your Boss on BNET

How good is that ?|shocking|

Not impressed at all. I own a Major Mud information site (an AD&D online type game) that has been listed with DMOZ for about 10 years now. At least one page hits in the top 10 on a Google search. On Cuil, nothing... I used to edit that category for DMOZ for about 5 years, and know most of the sites. The ones Cuil lists have not updated since around 2000. Of course, the game has not had an update since 2002 either.

What I do see is in Slavic languages, or very very out of date. Sigh.. not a good thing.

Weird way of submitting to it but here's the link if anyone is interested...

One of them, Ann Patterson, is probably responsible for creating Google's supplemental results, which allows Google to crawl a ton of more pages than it used to. Using (internal) PageRank as a crawl-meter, Google tends to crawl lower PageRank pages less often than pages with higher PageRank. Pages in the supplemental index (invisible now, but still exists) are on a different crawl queue; Google used to crawl supp pages every 3-4 months. That delay allowed Google to cover more webspace without exhausting resources.

That algo is probably the cornerstone of Cuil.com, which prouds itself on being able to index more pages off the web than any other engine.

Saturnin 2008-08-31 06:51 PM

Thanks for the crawl listing. Will keep my eyes out to see if it shows up. Did a search for one term which I know well and it came up with "Thai International Footballers". That's not even close...
