LinkedIn Question

A long time back I joined LinkedIn because an Aunt who had left the country joined and I thought it was a way to keep contact. It wasn't (we used Facebook in the end) and I did nothing with the account. It has no activity except my joining and it has no information about me except that which I had to give to sign up. However, every now and then, I get an email from the system telling me that someone who I don't know, and who does not know me, has asked to be added to my contact list.

My question is this: Why do they bother? What is in it for them? They have no idea who I am, or anything about me, I am just a random name to them. So what is the advantage to them to get me to add them to my contact list?

Sounds like the bots just like on other social media sites. The bot accounts need follows/followers to look like valid accounts, then they can sell accounts or follow links to make products/people/events seem popular and trending. It's a problem on twitter, not so sure about linkedin.

Thanks.

I get bot-invited on a dummy account I have there, and I also get invites to join LinkedIn at addresses not used on the dummy. Those often make it seem that someone I actually know is asking me to join. I think those may be sent when someone dumps their address book into LinkedIn.

But mostly it's the bots.

LinkedIn is use to find jobs and company to find resources...

At least it's very popular in my country specially for the IT area!

I've been on it for two maybe three years now. Nothing has ever come of it.

The bulk of new business for me, be it adult or non-adult, comes and has always come from long-time industry contacts, referals from same, and from interaction on industry boards.

So far LinkedIn hasn't even been worth the time it took to join.
