Domain / SE Questions

Ok I am curious about domains and why some people register the ones they do.

My biggest question is, are the domains with keywords seperated by dashes beneficial?

Example: lets say you could get free-naked-pictures.com or something.

Is it really beneficial to get that search engine wise or anything? Granted it might be good for a domain with galleries on it or an avs site, but does having a domain like that really help with SE's or anything?

OK, Now on to question #2.

Is it still beneficial to put a bunch of words on your page that belong to your niche (kinda like meta keywords) but make them blend in with the background? I remember a long time ago everyeone used to put a bunch of words on the page at the bottom and blend them in with the background, does that still work to enchance SE listings?

Hypenated domain names have always been regarded as good search engine fodder. The "-" is somewhat invisible to Googlebot.

Do a search for an underscore and then a hypen and you will see that the hypen shows no results and the underscore shows millions.

Problem is that spammers buy up a lot of hypenated domains and place no real content on them so their Google life expectancy is limited.

big-sex-porn.com isolates the keywords better than bigsexporn.com which could be confused with "bigs exporn".

Question 2 is a can of worms. :)

I would disagree with Urb on both counts.. :)

The domain name you use is only part of the picture as usual.. and a well structured page on a non-hyphened domain could easily outscore a hyphened domain.

IMO - You wont find a "-" in a search as it is an operator and you will find "_" as it is a character.

Also as the domain name is only part of the whole picture... you can out rank "keyword" domains, with a domain that does not even contain the keyword.

I am ranked top #10 at Google for "keyword1 keyword2", with a domain that does not contatin either keyword...while

keyword1-keyword2.com
keyword1-keyword2.net
keyword1-keyword2.org

don't even get in the top 100.

Thats said... using a domain with the keyword you are tragetting can help, but as usual it is not THE answer.

Re: question #2 - NO!

Look at http://www.google.com/contact/spamreport.html - the number one check box response is for "Hidden text or links"

Dave hit the nail on the head. That's why it is invisible. Google ignores them.

IMO hypenated will gain you an edge, but as Dave said it's only part of the mix.

[edit] Now I've read this thread again, I am confused as to what Dave disagrees with. :)[/edit]

I can't argue with the guy who has two top 3 listings on Google for this

There's more to a good domain than just keywords- look at establishing a brand as well.

As for the words at the botom of the page, why worry about making them blend with the background? It's not like you have to worry that the surfers are actually going to stop and read them ;)

This way you're happy, Google's happy, everybody's happy....

I do that for my main sites (branding) I guess I was thinking more about domains used for generating traffic, places to put free galleries etc. Ways to get more traffic.

Since I just started the gay site I just registered:
gay-pictures-movies.com
free-gay-amateurs.com
hardcore-gay-movies.com

Are those any good? I also registered porn-bbs.com a month or so ago and havnt used that but figured it might be a search term :)
