Is DMOZ down for the count?

I haven't been able to reach DMOZ for a number of days now... can't trace my way there, my servers can't see it, I can't see it...

anybody got any news on this?

Alex

I can reach DMOZ no problem but I can't add new URLs as it just never goes through. It also never times out which is really strange. I left one going last night and this morning it was still loading, WTF.

Yeah, I finally got there, and got a pile of errors trying to access pages, trying to search, and all sorts of crap. They need to put some banners on that thing so they can make enough money to pay for decent equipment... this is sad!

Anyone want to start a search engine?

I can get to DMOZ more often recently but the submit page gives me the error Cleos describes.:(

I think it's improving.. but your right Alex.. it needs to get better before it gets abandoned.

DMOZ needs a newSugar Daddy for sure... Netscape has pretty much given up on it...

I posted on this very topic several months ago on this very board and was chastised by editors who are members here. I do not wish to fight and argue about things which others are clueless. Pity since I thought most webmasters would appreciate the advance knowledge, however, as usual, I’m wrong. |sad|

Heh Surfin remember.... we LOST all those posts.....

Three months ago, I couldn't get to DMOZ..... now I can get to DMOZ and even get to the category page, (so I guess things are getting better) but no joy on the submit script :(

Anyone know which engines / indexes still pay major attention to DMOZ?

Linkster 2003-09-30 05:34 AM

Jeremy..Google still pulls a feed from DMOZ for its directory...when it can get one...it tends to be way behind :)
There are alot of other smaller directories that mirror the DMOZ data that are good for links to your sites when they get botted by Google as well. Of course, right now, that also means that Yahoo, AOL and Netscape(who use the Google data) are getting that info.

Cheers Linkster :)

So it seems to be getting more secondary with residual benefits, aside from some PR.

IE there's no directory / engine that's pulling them as primary results like AOL Search did for a while a couple of years ago?

Linkster 2003-09-30 08:07 PM

Jeremy :) There are still a lot of little directories out there that use DMOZ's results, so if anything it just counts as more backlinks to your sites from more sites.
As far as primary directories - Google(and therefore AOL and Netscape) in their "directory" sections (not the normal web search) still use the DMOZ directory, however Google tends to not use all of the results...they filter some out.

Today's DMOZ excuse:

Quote:

Submission Outage
The ODP 'add url' form is temporarily disabled while we run statistics to track down some performance issues. It should be back on Wednesday, October 1, at 2pm PDT.
Does it ever end? :-)
