Moving sites from one host to another
I plan to move my sites from one host to another.
There is someting i am worried about. 1. if there will be some downtime during this process, will my domains get banned from link lists? Any good advises? |bananna
blah
You should not get banned as long as you have this post up here, post your domain name also in this post though.
If for some reason you do get banned for downtime, you can refer the linklist owner to this thread as proof that you warned people. No guarantee you current sites wont be deleted (if you down for too long) but you shouldnt get blacklisted at all. |
You can also make a seemless hosting change..
Make sure 1 week before you want to move you have duplicated your site from your old host to the new host. then apply for the dns change, should take 24-72 hours for your new host to be getting hits from your domain. and you wouldnt loose any traffic from downtimes. After you are certain your old host is not getting any hits, close your account with them. I've done it about a dozen times to date all went off without a hitch. |
Klove,
That what i thought i could do, but the new host, xwebhost.com, wont let me add the domains, since the dns arent pointing to their server, therefore, i cant prepare it before i change the dns. |

Good luck. |
I'm with twintone - if they won't let you at least get your shit moved over & set up for the DNS change, then you will experience downtime, you will have 404's & you will get blacklsited.
Then you have to find all the place that blacklisted you, tell them to come here & read this post and, possibly not have the bans lifted because you could have prevented it. Tell your new host that you have to put your domains (not dns) on their server with all the files before you move. |
I really HATE moving hosts, it's such a pain. My advice is to CLICK EVERYTHING to make sure it's working. Don't assume anything.
Also beware of file permissions changing on ya. |pcsucks
|shake| guys,
ill ask them to make me able to prepare everyting for the dsn change, and in the mean time , ill see what alternative hosts i can find out there... |bat
we have moved many clients over seamlessly by:
1) changing them to dynamic DNS 2) copying over the sites 3) updating dynamic DNS and the new server is recognized within about 20-30 minutes! cheers, Luke |
The best to do it is to transfer all your content + databases + emails + crontabs + any other misc settings first to the new host.
Then you should ask them for a dedicated IP that you can test your moved sites with. Once everything checks out ONLY then update authorative name servers to the new host. Since early September NS changes take 5 mins, and you can realistically expect traffic to switch over within 4-6 hours, so its important to verify the new destination is ready to accept traffic. Check out www.RealityCheckNetwork.com -- we do account migrations for free and have had very good success in the past. |
