whats up with ppls screen resolution ?

one quick look at stats :

800x600 40%
1024x768 40%

the last 20 %

1152x864
1280x1024
640x480
1600x1200

Not even my mom whos 53 years old uses 800x600 any more. Dont even know anyone who uses 800x600. Whats up with that ?

Greenguy 2003-09-30 04:29 PM

I'm at 1152x864 but I know my brother-in-law who has an old monitor is stil on 800x600 - alot of people have no clue that you can even change the settings & just leave the defaults in there from when they buy the monotor :D

right.. still a lot of 15" monitors out there. You also have the people that use laptops, even at home, and use 800x600 because they feel 1024x768 makes things just a LITTLE to small. But, 640x480? wow... didn't know ANYBODY still used that.

Just think how these sites look on my PDA |sad|

DangerDave 2003-09-30 05:07 PM

I run at 1280x1024.. but review at 1024 x768, and have a second machine set at 800 X 600, which I still believe is the standard resolution for surfers, though 1024 might finally have passed it..

I design my pages to fit within a window that is 780 pixels wide, Golive's suggested size for a 17" monitor.

When I'm in my office I work with a 22" monitor that is plugged into my laptop so I'm working with two monitors as my laptop's screen becomes a second monitor.

I keep my CRT monitor to 1024x768. My laptop has a 17" wide screen that I keep set to 1152x720.

Doing reviews I keep the browser window set to about 800 pixels wide and usually decline if the site is much wider then that.

Lots of surfers use AOL or other things that takes up part of the screen so just because someone has their monitor set to 1024 wide doesn't mean that their browser window is 1024 wide.

As far as people who are still at 640 wide, well if they can't afford a decent monitor then they probably can't afford to buy anything either. :D

The truth is that if I design for 640 wide it just looks way too tiny on 80% of the surfers screens.

DD: heh-heh... I have four computers in this part of the office... another one downstairs... and the laptop. I collect.

Maggie: You might want to look at Matrox G550 video card, two monitors, lets you REALLY spread out your desktop. They even have a newer one that runs three monitors... wrap around! ;-)

:)

stuveltje 2003-10-01 08:50 AM

i have a 17" monitor and have it on 800x600 indeed bigger looked strange and very small .i build my sites on 800x600, when time will come i will change to bigger.....but not now!!!|couch|

urb 2003-10-01 08:57 AM

I still build for 800x600 (780 pixels) or use tables width = 100% instead of a pixel size.

A college tech guy told me recently that they had fifty new P4 PC's delivered with 17" monitors, all systems were set to 800x600 as the factory standard setting.

I've seen it kill lots of computers. Just had it kill a 2 year old G4 last week. The inside of the tower had a thick yellow layer with the mother board etched away in places. It is really bad for CD drives as it destroys the lens. I can only imagine what it does to the smoker's body.

Guess you can tell I'm not a cigarette smoker.

|potleaf| <-- Just makes you too stupid to use a computer, great for messing up submits, best to do outdoors as no one wants a stoned computer. :D

Beer in the keyboard isn't very good either, lol.

Yep!!! Not good at all mate - Plus you have to paint the office ceiling every year.... and the Mrs would cut my balls off if she caught me smoking in here... I've come quite attached to them, so complying isn't too difficult :)

Yeps...
At least all the PC users I know. ( Im talking about non-webmasters :) )
I haven't really met anyone using a Mac that wasnt able to figure it out.

LilBiggz 2003-10-01 01:28 PM

I still build my sites at 800x600 but try to also check them at 1024.
( when I can remember )
I have started making my thumbs alot <-- look Jim larger recently though.

ladydesigner 2003-10-01 02:55 PM

I have a new 17" monitor and have it set to 800x600. I tried going bigger but everything was so small! When designing, I never go wider on my graphics than 745 pixels.

Hey danger, that office looks a bit dangerous |couch|

but not as dangerous as mine :) Dishes, wrappers, tissues, speakers taller than most large primates and a bed on the floor.. just a pile of blankets really and a guitar amp almost as tall as me.... ah the life of a webmaster.

I see you have your cases opened. having heat issues?

backoffbitch 2003-10-01 05:31 PM

That cabinet will tear your head off if you are not carefull... it actualy made me sick once.

Back to topic at hand.. this is what I use. A 15 inch old monitor at 1024x768. I want something more and something bigger. I want to fit two 17 inch flat crt's in that monitor dugout. I actualy measured it, I could fit two sansung 17's in there side by side with room to breathe.
http://back-off-bitch.net/temp/2.jpg

Hrm... New contest idea. GG&J mods chose webmaster with worst monitor setup and donate dual 17's to the winner :) ... ok... I tried at least |bananna| |bananna| |roses|

SirMoby 2003-10-01 05:34 PM

DD I could never work in your office. Being able to see the back door and the barbeque would keep me hungray all day.

DangerDave 2003-10-01 05:44 PM

doublep, it is a BBQ... and yeah I spotted that as I posted and thought.. "ohh that's a bit weird looking?" I knew some one would point it out... :D ... but noone asked about the Nail Polish Remover on my desk??? :)

magpie - it's a workable mess.. I hate "clean" :)

Cleo my machines are always "naked", partly so I can tinker without removing bloody covers.. but mostly as Urb said... to keep the heat down. A fan(behind me on the right) feeds a cool breeze over them continuously.

I have never lost a machine to smoke... but I probably should have.:)

backoffbitch - haha yes, this was the new office, in it's "clean period":) I managed to frame the photo right to avoid the "really" bad bits.

LMAO , I will let my wife see that picture you took.
Maybe it will take her off my back with all the complaints about the big mess I have created around me.

More than I am tierd of all the false promises I have to give her
every day she is tierd of listening to them |violin|

I have 5 pc's
2 work stations , 2 servers (1 for backup), 1 Firewall
connected to a switch which is also connected to a router.
Consider all the network cables, Line cables and power cords
and you will get the picture of the big mess I work in.

I use a 17" monitor set to 600x800 which is optimal to my opinion.
I guess 1024x768 looks better on bigger monitors.
