Your opinions needed

Hi all,

I have been approached by a webmaster who has told me he wants to start a LL and has registered a name which is very similar to the name of my LL.

He says he wasnt aware of my LL and his searches on the name didnt turn my site up.

My logs show that the words in his new name are used to find my site.

I've told him I'm not happy about him starting a LL with such a similar name, but thought I'd get opinions from other LL owners.

So what do you think ?

JoeBlack 2004-12-23 05:46 AM

hey Pervy

Mind if I ask how close is close ? By a word, letter, or a dash.

Also is it a themed name ?

P.S you have a PM

Hi Joe,

My site is Foxy's Sex Clearinghouse, also know simply as Foxy's or Foxy's Adult Links and Foxy's Sex Links.

His is Foxy's Porn Links www.foxy-porn-links.com

The words/terms Foxy, Foxy's, Foxy sex links etc are all used to find my site

It just seems a little too close for me and the confusion is likely to only benefit him.

How would you feel if I registered pornranch-links.com ?

p.s Thanks for the pm

Yeah I understand where your coming from.

IMO Pervy that is to close for a domain name to your themed site. You have banners and buttons that clearly state foxys has your brand.

Although I think they are to close im not sure what you can do about it or him using it. Im sure someone more experience with this matter will come along shortly to tell you your options.

PM again :)

That's a tough one, because he's using "foxy" as an adjective & you're uisng it as a noun.

But I do understand what you're saying & I can see both sides of it.

Pervy 2004-12-23 09:50 AM

I've been thinking of changing the name and losing the Foxy's bit...

The script I use isnt up to the task anymore so I am currently evaluating LL scripts and once I choose one I figured it would be a good time to think about switching the name so its the same as the actual domain.

I'm still undecided though as there are a lot of sites out there with my Foxy's recip on them....

I guess it only matters if people searching for my site find his and think its mine.... whether thats really a big issue who knows.....

Useless 2004-12-23 09:52 AM

In my thinking, it won't be good for either of you. It will obviously take some of your search engine traffic for the terms 'foxy' and 'foxy's', but it also means that his/her new list will never meet its full traffic potential for the same reason. It's really going to come down to who is better at SEO.

Cleo 2004-12-23 09:55 AM

Foxy is a pretty generic term like babe or stud.

Hell I run www.FoxyAngel.com for the owner of the site. Angel's use of FoxyAngel pre-dates the internet.

amadman 2004-12-23 11:12 AM

I don't think I would change the name because of this. Seems like that would just be throwing away se traffic. Besides even though it may be fairly new to you the site does have years of branding as Foxy's.

Cleo that is very true, but the difference there is that www.FoxyAngel.com is not a link list and would not benefit off of his branding.

FTS 2004-12-23 11:21 AM

he took the time to contact you, so it seems he wants your approval before proceeding... just say no and maybe offer to register him another domain?

MadMax 2004-12-23 12:50 PM

Basically what happened from my end is this: I've got Tart working on some mascots for me, and I came up with a theme for a new LL I'd been planning on putting together based somewhat on my ability to get a sexy "fox girl" as a mascot. Before I reged the domain I did searches on Foxy Porn and Foxy Sex, but I was primarily looking for LLs with "foxy" in the url so Pervy's domain www . sexclearinghouse . com honestly didn't throw up a flag for me.

So, I reged foxy-porn-links.com and installed my LL script...then a couple weeks later saw Pervy's post about him looking for a new LL script. Since I try to be an honest person we talked in PM and decided to put the concept out here for opinions. Obviously I'd rather not abandon the concept, but I'm not far enough along with it that it would kill me. I won't cry about the $8 for the domain name and I can probably get XPL support to take care of me on re-licensing that copy of the script for a different domain.

I'm just glad I saw Pervy's post before I spent a few hundred hours on site design and deployment. I think there's plenty of room for both of us in the SERPS since he doesn't come up in the first few pages for "foxy porn" and other than the common niche terms that's what I'd be optimizing for, but the bigger concern for me is the branding issue. If I went ahead with the site it would be "Foxy's Porn Links" with "Foxy" as the mascot.

Useless 2004-12-23 03:16 PM

I've spent some time thinking about this, which for those of you who know me, is an oddity in itself. My opinion is hovering around what Cleo said, and it's not just the fear of having several trannies coming after me if I were to disagree with her.

I just don't see the branding for the term foxy being all that strong in the current search engine listings. If he purchased 'foxy-link-o-rama.com, then there is definately a branding issue.

I agree completely. I think Pervy gets SE hits from people using adjectives in their searches...not necessarily looking for his LL. I get a lot of search terms in my logs that have adjectives in them. I don't think it is a big deal.

Pervy 2004-12-24 06:33 AM

I appreciate everyone's opinions and MadMax was good enough to approach me once he realised there might be an issue with the name.

I've just PM'd him to say I have no problem with him using the name for his new Link List.

However, havign just read the new posts in this thread, I have just seen for the first time what MadMax is planning in terms of branding.

These are examples of my branding

http://www.sexclearinghouse.com/images/foxys.gif

http://www.sexclearinghouse.com/images/fsc_ban1.gif

http://www.sexclearinghouse.com/images/fsch_but3.gif

I hope MadMax's sexy fox girl isnt too similar....

Merry Xmas everyone !!!

I would think that since he has been so upfront with you from the beginning, he would go out of his way to make sure it is not close.

Merry Christmas!!

Useless 2004-12-24 05:34 PM

Didn't he say that Tart is working on that? I'm sure they'll take care of that.

I really like your sexclearinghouse domain. I have this odd image of a big warehouse of porn and whores, all on sale. That's pretty cool.

Pervy 2004-12-26 08:42 PM

Thanks again to everyone that has posted an opinion, I appreciate all your comments.

Also to MadMax for coming to me in the first place, that is the sign of an honest individual.

I'm sure everything will work out fine, I certainly don't want to do anything to stop Max from doing business.

So for now I think we can leave it, I'm sure you'll all hear what happens down the road.

Happy Holidays !!

MadMax 2004-12-27 01:05 PM

I certainly do my best to be an honest, up front person. Anyone I've done business with will attest to that. In the interest of being up front, these were my plans/concepts from the outset in comparison to what Pervy has going:

Overall design:
ME: White background with orange accents/links, primarily black text
PERVY: Purple background with yellow text & links

MY "FOXY": Will be a 3D animated fox girl with fur, fox ears, the whole 9 yards.
PERVY'S "FOXY": The only one I've seen is in the recip, but that's a belly to thigh shot of an actual model in stockings with an animated fox's tail added.

MY RECIPS: Will be tables/text
PERVY'S RECIPS: Animated GIFs

I also did some more research, and Pervy's primary targeted keywords seem to be "foxy sex", and according to the Overture keyword tool there have been a total of 134 searches this month for terms similar to "foxy sex", and of that 84 of them included "sex clearinghouse". Also 303 searches for "foxys sex clearinghouse." This makes me much more comfortable, since it tells me that I wouldn't be taking any traffic away from Pervy due to the fact that those searching for his site are using "sex clearinghouse" in their searches and I won't be optimizing for anything similar. Thus I wouldn't be taking traffic from him or losing traffic to him.

Looks to me like it's all good, but I'd welcome any more opinions before final decisions are made :)

RawAlex 2004-12-27 04:08 PM

While I think there is a potential for some confusion here, there is a limit to what can be done.

I own link2x.com - there is another link (tgp style) site on link2x.biz

I think that is WAY more blatant.

Looks to me like its all good too. Like I said I really appreciate you contacting me and its been interesting to see the opinions of other respected link list owners.

Looks like everything is worked out, but just to add my 7 cents, I wouldnt be overly concerned about it, shit he could have taken your source.

I guess he could have, although since I use a script that builds the pages from templates he would have to use the same script and figure out how to convert the html backwards into the correct templates for it the work.

I wonder what script he's going to use ?

JoeBlack 2004-12-28 04:08 AM

Pervy he is going to be using Xpower Links Script on his new LL :)

I'm glad you two worked this out. Its good to see two reasonable business men work something out without there having to be any drama involved.

Good luck to the both of you on your LLs |waves|
