Johnny Carson, the “Tonight Show” TV host who served America a smooth nightcap of celebrity banter, droll comedy and heartland charm for 30 years, has died, NBC News has learned. He was 79 years old.

“Mr. Carson passed away peacefully early Sunday morning,” his nephew, Jeff Sotzing, told The Associated Press. “He was surrounded by his family, whose loss will be immeasurable. There will be no memorial service.”

I'll have to watch my "Best of Johnny Carson " DVD today.. |waves| RIP Johnny..

In high school, I stayed up and watched Carson with my father every weeknight. That was our bonding hour. :(

The Tonight Show started right after I was born. It was strange when he retired. He was such a classy comedian. How many people are at thier best when the jokes fail? He will be missed.

I just recently heard that he would get up in the morning, read the newspaper, write a few jokes and then call David Letterman and give them to him.

.......it is indeed a sad day for America. He was one funny guy. I hope Bush enacts a Johnny Carson day!

I do like how Leno is playing off his death for ratings, with a 5 minute monologue on him & having Ed McMahon on the show as a guest.
