Drivers
I am trying to get an old computer and monitor back in use for a friend. The only problem is that having replaced the hard drive and re-installed Windows 98 I have lost the drivers. Most of them I have been able to replace, but not the monitor driver. The native Windows driver only allows resolution of 640 X 480 and 16 colours. I know it can do better (I was running it on 800 X 600 when I was using it, I am not sure of the colour depth I used, but it was a hell of a lot higher than 16 colours). Unfortunately I cannot find a better driver, when I try to "search for more up to date drivers" I get told that this is the best available, and when I contact HP (it is a Compaq) they deny all knowledge of the existence of this model.
I vaguely remember having this problem before, when I lost a hard drive, and I think I got a better generic Windows driver for the system, but I cannot remember where from. Can anyone help, please. |
Ecchi, it might not be the monitor driver, but the driver for the video card. Make sure you have the right one there (and not "generic microsoft driver").

MS often installs the best driver, which is usually crap. I know I've seen driver sites, but dont remember any off hand. Sure a quick SE search will give you plenty.

RawAlex - Thanks, I am going to look into that in the morning.
ronnie -I have spent hours on Google, and tried several download sites, so far none have been able to help. (I even downloaded some test software from one, that said the driver installed was the best). |
http://www.drivers.com/ - this sorted out a similar issue for me some time ago though the site appears to have changed some what

You've probably already thought of this, but searching for the monitor manufactor's website? Course HP or compaq do not make everything for a system, could be another manufactor.
Like I said, maybe you already thought about it. ronnie |
Thanks for your help guys, I got it sorted at last. I am glad I asked here because I got the answer I needed, but terminally embarrassed because RawAlex was correct, it was the driver to the video card not the monitor. I cannot believe I was so stupid not to think of that.
Thanks again for your help, I am off now to stand in a corner with a dunce's cap on my head. |
Hey, you got it figured out, thats what counts..:)
