Yahoo Directory - Is it worth it?

Yahoo doesn't love me. I know from info passed on to me by the SEO experts on this board that overall Yahoo doesn't really love link lists, but I mean Yahoo doesn't even like me...not any of my sites. The inktomi bot crawls the hell out of all of them and supposedly I've got hundreds of pages indexed, but I don't really get any traffic to speak of.

Lately, after figuring out how much my conversions have gone up based on Fetish Philes getting out of the sandbox and Google sending me some real love, if I could expect similar results out of Yahoo I could easily justify spending the $600 Yahoo charges to get Fetish Philes added to their directory, but I have no idea if it would actually be worth it.

Thoughts?

Well, there are a couple of issues with that...

It used to be well worth it to buy into the directory. But, the return on investment and the directory traffic dropped big time over the years as yahoo changed the way it delivered results. Because of this I, at least, haven't bought in a new site for some years.

That's issue 1.

issue 2 is that a linklist or a tgp type site might have a hard time getting accepted- it's been discussed here before that yahoo seems to have a policy of blocking at least some linklists, and in theory some tgps, because, presumably, linklists don't actually have content, but only point to content.

I don't have any direct evidence that something like philes wouldn't be accepted, but, let's say, it would surprise me if it got accepted.

It certainly doesn't fit the well known formula of what is known to get accepted, which is something like a big old-fashioned 100 pic persian kitty type site.

In short, it's not worth it (at least for now).

There is a rumor that Yahoo is going to direct more attention onto their directory. Whatever that means is still a mystery.

It's not worth it ...

It is worth it for me. I made it in the 'popular' sites and tons of keyword phrases in Google land in the that yahoo directory :)

For 2 months it paid off the 600 bucks only with initial sales.

Bill 2005-03-13 05:11 AM

What type of site was that absix?

When did you go thru the process?

i think listing site in yahoo directory is important ,but for the question "is it worth it ?"
i think it's changes from site to site, i am getting about 300-500 hits from yahoo dir
and few days ago got to #6 for keyword "sex" in dir search
http://search.yahoo.com/search/dir?p...gle=1&ei=UTF-8 :)
and i think it will help to get better in google also

Bill 2005-03-13 06:48 PM

Well, that certainly suggests that yahoo is accepting linklist/directory type sites.

I also get 200-600 a day from the sites I listed back in the day- I used to get 500-1500+ before they changed the yahoo serps to devalue the directory.

Is it cream traffic? Ahh, it's average. Used to be creamy, tho.

Anybody else get a linklist accepted in the pay-for-review yahoo directory in the past year?

Anybody get a linklist rejected?

Maybe yahoo has devalued so many linklists in the regular serps to force them to pay their $600 a year...

Well I am a bit leery to do it since they can reject your site and you don't get a dime of your money back if they decide not to add it.

On the other hand, one of my friends made it into the popular list too and that traffic seems to be pretty quality. He told me his conversions skyrocketed.

Just depends on lady luck, I guess.

It's an adult personals site and I submitted it about 2 months ago.

If you have decent content, not just banner farm they'll list you.

Bill 2005-03-14 05:00 AM

That sounds pretty much like the type of site that I know yahoo does accept with their $600 deal.

I've heard 3 or 4 stories of TGPs and start-up linklists being rejected with the same deal, altho none of these were recent, most a year or so ago.

As always with yahoo directory, much depends on which reviewer you get, some have been known to be very lenient. There was a time when the directory was filled with pretty cheesey sites, redirecting straight to sponsors and stuff like that.

I haven't looked in the directory lately.

If Max wants to get more info on wether or not to risk the $600, the best thing to do would be to study the category of the directory he wants to buy into, and see what their new sites look like. Then, basically build something similar in form, with equivalent but different content.

Bottom line, you have to be willing to lose the $600.

Thanks for all the advice guys.

It seems like most of the major players in the LL biz are listed in the directory and in the category I'd like to be in...only problem is I can't tell when they were listed, so the issues brought up in this thread may very well still apply. If I were rich already I wouldn't worry about it. |king| Unfortunately I'm not.

Decisions, decisions......

every listing in a directory is worth something - but if it's worth the price is another question
