I must be worth a million dollars

I keep seeing people asking $250 or more for boring three word domain names, and often they even include hyphens. What a shame that we can't get prices like that for names - I think I'd be tempted to sell up and go back to property development. I did an on-line valuation of my domain www.sexelf.com once, and I got told it was worth $350,000 - I'd be happy if I got half that for it. :D

stuveltje 2005-03-26 04:01 PM

hell i would sell for less then half, but then i am an money whore:D

stuveltje 2005-03-26 04:04 PM

oke now seriously, an domain is worth what an other wants to pay for it, now the best domains are, the ones an other person wants to buy from you and you dont wanna sell...you can ask the sky if they realy want your domain:D

I'm going through a phase when I think that if a domain can earn you at least $10 a year, then you're better off hanging on to it. :)

A couple of years ago I spent a lot of time on the drop lists, and grabbed some good low end names. I got fed up and let a load of them drop as I didn't get round to doing anything with them. That was a big mistake, and I've now got some on sedo and some with just banners, but I've come to realise that the smart thing to do is to put free sites with some spider food on them.

I'm big in the domain selling game. Here's my latest sale, though it did fall through. Seems the buyer forgot to inform his wife about her end of the deal.:D

No, but I still have his bottles and cans in the trunk of my wife's car. I never liked returning bottles. It's just so seedy.

It was one of those online sites that just looks at length word cotent and the like. Everybody outside the biz seems to think that adult names are worth a fortune. but without traffic, they aren't worth much. There are still loads of names unregistered, for example I reg'd www.pervertedlesbians.com yesterday. It's a bit long but it's descriptive and only $7 per year.:)

When placing a value on a domain name, I reflect on my father's collection of antique irons. He has over 400 and claims their values to be between $50 and $600 each, depending on the model. To him, they are treasures. To me, and most of the world, they are door stops and paper weights. Value, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. I wouldn't pay more than 12.95 for any domain name.

My opinion is, if you cannot think up a good domain name yourself, you have not got the smarts necessary to succeed in this business anyway.

Head Boy 2005-03-29 05:14 PM

It's not so much the thinking up of the name, but the checking that it's available, and checking it's history. Sometimes it's worth paying a couple of hundred dollars just to save your time. I turn it round the other way and watch to see what pops up, and then work out a site for it. That's how I ended up with the nick Head Boy. :)

I've just had somone reg a biz domain through me. I charged him 9 dollars and it's a number, letter, letter name. He's just put it up for sale at $10,000 to see if anyone is mad enough to buy it. It never works for me, and I suspect I'll be a bit stressed if he sells it. He found the name btw.

A domain is worth how much someone is willing to pay for it.

IMO, I wouldn't pay more than the reg fee for sexelf.com.

Roby 2005-03-30 08:11 AM

but you have to be so lucky to have very expancive domain name.
