Who are Acacia Media and are they for real?
 

I just received a letter from this Company Acacia Media Technologies Corp. saying that anyone providing streaming media or links to a site that provides streaming media must sign a License agreement with them. The license starts out at $1500 a year and goes up based on gross. Has anyone here heard of these people ? Is this a scam? They claim to have licenses with CE Cash, and Platinum Bucks.


Any info on how serious this is would be great I've had sites up for about 6 or 7 months but it's mainly been just hobby/extra money every now and then. There is no way I can pay $1500 a year for this.

Ha ha ha. Yep, it's real.

If you are running small paysites or are in some other way streaming, you might have a problem.

Nobody seems certain as to wether or not little video users, or, for instance, movie gallery makers, are going to be seriously pursued.

Stay tuned. I'm sure you'll see tons more acacia talk soon.

I should add that so far it's just threatening letters, you shouldn't worry too much, you should get yourself educated on the debate and the situation, and maybe get prepared to get a lawyer. Most important, read around about it.

There are so many unanswered questions about this it's not even funny. But I have to laugh anyway, some patent comapany threatening porn webmasters, it's nicely surreal.

I'm assuming you have been away from the boards for a while. This has been the main topic on conversation recently.

For more info here are two places to visit.

IMPA who are organising the defense and Fight The Patent who are organising the search for "Prior Art" and keeping people informed.

But don't be frantic about it, they sent out 1,000s of those packages. Even sent one to my US corperation that does not own or run our sites. Just stuck the name up on the site for a few weeks to get a merchant account. If they ask nicely I will give them 50% of the corporation turn over. What is 50%of nothing?

It was nice to hear that this is being worked on and that people with much more experiance then me are dealing with it. Again thanks for all of the feed back it has lowered my blood presure significantly.
