Excited Catholics Already Lining Up, For Pope's Funeral

Excited Catholics Already Lining Up For Pope's Funeral

VATICAN CITY—Their numbers reaching into the hundreds, excited Catholics are lining up in front of St. Peter's Basilica in the hopes of scoring a seat for the upcoming funeral of Pope John Paul II.

Sipping hot cocoa Monday while seated in a folding chair, Salvatore Bruni, 56, a Florence tailor, said he has been in line since Feb. 10.

"I don't know how much longer I'll have to wait, but whether it's five days or five months, it'll be well worth it," said Bruni from his position near the front of the queue. "This is going to be a funeral I'll never forget."

For all the faithful's enthusiasm, some observers say the queued Catholics are wasting their time, insisting that they will be squeezed out of the funeral by the countless heads of state and other dignitaries that will descend upon the Vatican from around the world.

"When [the pope] dies, it will be an unbelievable event. Everybody who's anybody will be there," said Dr. Lawrence Shear, dean of the Yale School of Divinity. "The media requests alone could fill that basilica. Since the Vatican is always looking for the kind of coverage the death of a major leader brings, the devoted will be out of luck."

Continued Shear: "I think the best those poor Catholics can hope for is to be interviewed about their feelings on the pope's passing by local TV news affiliates while wailing in St. Peter's Square."

Have you ever noticed how much the Capital building in D.C. looks like St. Peter's Basilica?

OTHER RELIGIONS? what are these other religions you speak of? (all 700 of them and they all must be right)

Cleo 2005-04-02 10:17 AM

Yeah those religions, the ones that know that their god(s) are the only true one so they are trying to kill all the other ones. Wait they are claim to be the true one so I guess they are all correct. Wow god does work in fucking mysterious ways.

Personally this whole solving the death issue with myths of religious just doesn't work for me. I say more effort into solving this whole we wear out and cease to function and become piles of decaying flesh issue and less holy book thumping. I wonder how long religion would last if we stopped growing old and dying?

Most religions seem to have a lot of hate and guilt in them governing how we are suppose to behave in our lives. How about forgetting about fears of souls, guilt, hate, and just treat others as you would like to be treated.

are you crazy? that would lead to world peace which is totally unacceptable to the men in power right now.... and it is comical that EVERYTHING works in cycles no matter what it is, but some refuse to admit it.... and I am seriously thinking of investing in a church... how do you go about doing that?

SexyCityGlen 2005-04-02 10:50 AM

All those religions are all talkin about peace and unity... yet they tend to kill others who dont believe in what they believe... so there is really no PEACE

Can anyone say HARSH! LOL as a Catholic, and this Pope being the one who has held that title most of my life, I can say that I am a little saddened by his demise. Ya know I actually watched Real Time with Bill Maher and the Pope was given some credit for the fall of Communism in the Soviet block, so he did a lot of good.
Now if I could just get over the resentment I feel towards all the churchs in the US I think I might just be able to start to save my immortal soul :)

Greenguy 2005-04-03 09:17 AM

How can you be a Cathloic & be in this business? Maher also reminded everyone that you can't just pick & choose which rules of the church you like & dislike. Sinner :D

Cleo 2005-04-03 09:20 AM

I thought it was kind of obscene seeing him dead laying there dressed in pope drag complete with his pole.

Just make it all go away. I really can't take another week of death watch TV.

Greenguy 2005-04-03 09:22 AM

Just think of all the "Who's going to be the next Pope?" stuff, followed by the "Welcome Pope Bobby John IV!" stories :D

Useless 2005-04-03 09:39 AM

Stick a fork in him.

Personally, I think it's time the Vatican takes a moment to realize the enormous income it would generate if they converted Vatican City into high-end condos. Do they have a pool there already? The must.

LOL cool that there are other people who watch ole Bill and his other godless liberals ranting on HBO LOL Easy answer to your question right here. Baptised Catholic when i was still crapping my pants (not an incontanance issues, I was an infant and had no choice LOL) went to latin mass every sunday of my life till i was 18 and decided ya know what, this aint for me. I picked and chose to pick and choose LOL I have gone back in a Catholic church 2 times since I left, both were for funerals......how ironic that its the death of someone else that makes me admit that!

For the religious types they could advertise that the pool is filled with Holy Water.

That sounds like my story - Dad wanted us to be good law abiding Christians so Mom was forced to take us to church. I haven't been to a real mass since I was confirmed. But I don't consider myself a "Cathloic" like you said in a previous post - I consider myself an "ex-Cathloic"

Sorta like OJ is an "ex-football player" and "ex-killer" :D
