Copying link titles and Description

If i start a new link list and need sites to link to, is it ok to use the same title and description that i find on someone elses linklist?

Ex.. Link-O-Rama

Joe 2005-04-11 07:18 AM

You should be fine, you reserve the right to have any anchor text as you're linking to them for free. ;)

Ramster 2005-04-11 08:20 AM

No you are not fine!!!!!!!

It is ok to grab links from other link lists but please please please do not copy descriptions. Grab the links and titles but write your own descriptions. Link lists do not like it when you copy the description but have no probleam grabbing as many links as you want to get 10-15 in each of your categories.

What Ramster said... :)

You should probably check with the list owner before using links as well. Remember that they pay people to review submission, and some don't seem to like their links being used.

About a year ago I tried to start a site that listed TGPs that gave permission for their links to be used, but it didn't get much attention, so I gave up on it. :)

Everyone "borrows" links form other sites, but do the right things & write up your own descriptions. And don't just copy & paste the link onto your pages - actually review them & make sure they fit into the rules that you have set up for your site.

Why use someone elses and get no value from the SE's because it's duplicate to someone elses page?
Tailor all of your text so it makes your site unique and worth a good rank from an SE.

Seems like a good way to go

Rocco 2005-04-11 09:47 AM

yeah, don't just copy and paste - that would be very bad, unless the owners agree to it

SirMoby 2005-04-11 10:07 AM

DO NOT copy descriptions from other sites. Link list and TP owner's work hard to create these and taking them is stealing.

I wonder how many link list owners are now scanning Joe's to see if there are any stolen descriptions. Although I think Joe just misunderstood the question.

I'm in the process of firing up my LL we-R-sex.com and have borrowed about 10 links/cat that I didn't have myself just to fill things up.

Where the freesites in question had a description as a part of the actual site (eg subtitle under the site's title on the index page) I used that. Otherwise I made my own descriptions.

Oops, I detract my comment.

I thought you meant linking to a LINKLIST -- Didn't know you meant grabbing a linklist's links.

Sorry, definitely didn't have enough sleep.

As has been said, feel free to farm some links as long as you write your own descriptions. Also, feel free to steal the descriptions I write for HFS if you keep my ref code in the links :D

Would it not be better for you to use your sponsor's free sites to start up. If you pick your sponsors carefully you will be able to get a good mix of good sites in all categories, good enough to satisfy your surfer. Plus you make the money from any signups.
