Finally, and as a last ditch effort; asked the woman, "You don’t, by any chance mean Buffalo, do you?" "Oh, right, that's it. I knew it was a big animal."

Well, I'm sure that buffalos closely resembled hippos after they were killed by the white man, skinned, and left to rot and bloat in the prairie sun. So that could lend to the confusion. Right? Maybe not.
