Changing host server.

I'm moving my site to a different host. Was with Yahoo, but they are adding counters to my pages which is causing problems with submitting galleries and Free sites to sites that don't like counters.

When I change the DNS registration will my site be down for a while or will it be seamless? I can upload my data to the new server before the DNS change but they say it may take up to 48 hours for the DNS change to take place.

Also, will I have to notify sites I submit too that my DNS is changing or does that matter?

If you can arrange for a little overlap, and the file paths don't change, once you switch the dns things will migrate over -- taking 24-48 hours to get about 95% of the traffic moved.

I would suggest 72 hours just to be sure you don't 404 when the linkbots do their work.

But, you should be safe -- don't try submitting anything during the transition unless you upload it to both accounts just in case you run into a linklist/TGP that has the old dns listing.

You should be pretty safe if you have everything on both servers

if everything is on both servers you should be good yes :) Just remember not to submit galleries/freesites etc the 3-4 first days (unless you upload to them to both hosts first).

DNS changed and traffic is instantly rerouted to new server.

If you can watch the server stats on your old host for a few more days.

I moved servers recently and a week later I was still seeing a few hits to my old server each day.

Stever 2005-05-20 09:47 PM

Yeah, right now about 10-20% is still going to the old server. Too early to tell but I think I like my new home. Stats reporting kind of sucks, no graphs. I love graphs (my science background). Will have to get my own stats software maybe.
But am very happy with $ and Bandwidth.

I'll whore for a bit. Check my sig.

So now only a very tiny fraction of my traffic is going to the old sever (less than 1%). When should I completely cancel my service at the old host? It's a pain having to upload data twice so i dont 404.

cd34 2005-05-24 05:47 PM

I would say you are pretty safe.
