It's not a new home for my non-existent bike, but.....

So I'm down in the Pool House today tidying up a bit for tomorrow's poker & red-neck race watching & I stand under one of the 4 speakers I have in my ceiling.....no sound :( I go to the next one...sound:) Next one...sound :) Last one...no sound |angry|

So I start to move stereo components around a bit to try different wires in different plugs & everything works except those 2 speakers (the nightmare that is my speaker wiring system is a sight to behold, let me tell you)

So I go into the attic & check the speakers directly with a spare tuner....they work!

This means that somewhere in the walls, something got fucked |banghead|

Far left is the rack for my stereo & typical to my interior design skills, I put the wires & connectors & volume controls behind it.....and of course, it's a daunting task to get to anything.

So tonight I will start the process of removing everything from the shelves & trying to remember which wire went where, then I'll be taking the jacks out of the walls & testing things & hopefully by poker time tomorrow, I'll be able to fix it.

All this because I am an anal bastard & I won't be able to enjoy myself knowing that 2 of the 10 total speakers that are hooked up are not working |cry|

Having done more than enough wiring to last a lifetime, run new cable to those two. Rather than try to troubleshoot, you'll save time just putting a new one in. If you just tossed the wires into the attic, you could use the existing wires as a pullwire.

Then call your exterminator to get rid of the critters, or your contractor to find out who put a nail through the wire. :)

Sparky - it's not that simple (but I wish it was)

Picture this: 4 sets of speakers - 2 big ass motha fucka's on the floor, 4 in the ceiling, 2 at the pool, 2 under the shelter - all run off the same receiver (*most of the time) Out from the receiver goes to a 4 way splitter which goes into the wall & each set then goes into separate volume controls (I can crank it in down by the pool & they can listen to it at a normal level in the Pool House) They then go thru the walls & in the case of the fucked set, into the ceiling & under the floor boards in the attic.

So, even eliminating the wall jacks & volume controls, it'd be a huge fucking pain to run new wires into the ceiling & then under the floor boards in the attic.

Which might be the fucking case anyway |banghead|

Just spent the last 2 hours taking apart the shelf & testing things, only to figure out that the problem is after the volume control & before the speaker - which means a little fucking critter probably decided that I listen to too much Nirvana when he sleeps & chewed thru the wire :(

So tomorrow I'll get to spend my day in a very hot attic checking things out |angry|

* I say most of the time (and the reason for the wall jacks) because I can disconnect the main receiver & hook up an old one that I have so that, if The Bitch is down by the pool, she can listen to her CD's/stations & I can relax in the pool house listening to mine :)

If you invite me to one of your parties I'll fill in the gap that one of those speakers creates now :D

Man, does that ever sound like a reason to look hard at what's out there in wireless adapters. Yeah, you lose a little if you're not digital thru-and-thru, but we're looking into it for similar reasons. Got some big honkers we want to hang on to, plus multiple speakers in other places that have been rewired more than once. Now we want music in the bath, plus we discovered the prior owner had speakers in the little boat house so of course we want to add music there too.

We already have wireless networks at home that connect our computers to tv and audio, so it looks like we're gonna go that way for hooking the speakers to the sources next.

I used to say "no more paper" and we're close here now. (Well, except for 2257 stuff. :D ) Now if we can just do "no more wires" too, that would be most excellent.

Oh yeah... I forgot my original question... did you get your wiring problem taken care of?

Simon

I half-ass'd fixed it by swapping the wires for a set of the lesser used speakers with the ones in the ceiling - so the problem still exists, but I don't notice it :D

I will be fishing a new set of speaker wires sometime soon :)

glad i'm not the only anal mafucka left in the game... i'll move all kinds of shit around for some tiny ass reason no1 else will understand. the first step to resolving a problem is admitting that ya have one :D
