Stranger in a Strange Land
Did everyone have to read this book either in High Shcool or College? I am just curious...
|
wasn't that an iron maiden song?
|
Never heard of the book but I've now got David Bowie's 'Changes' song going through my mind, and the visual of Shrek lol
|
I remember it as being a really good book. We had to read it in our first year of College. But it is worth the read.

I have been reading a lot lately so I started thinking of my favorite book. Stranger in a Strange Land has to be one of them.
I am reading all my Grandfather's books now. He collected books about our area and the Adirondacks. It's strange reading books where local towns are named. :) |
yeah, had to read it in my English classes: just remember the title but don't know anymore what the story was about.
|
Rocco, you should read it again. I think I am going to after my latest, "The Loomis Gang". :) It's about a local family of thieves. I am friends with some of the descendent's.
|
I never did. During my Libertarian phase (in high school and college) many of my buddies suggested I read it. Thanks for the reminder Jim. It is a book I should pick up!

The only book I ever had to read in High School was "The catcher in the rye". Still got it somewhere stuffed between my Raymond E. Feist collection.

Pretty much anything written by Heinlein is "required reading", but this one is definitely a keeper. I lost/misplaced my hardback edition several moves ago. Originally read it about 20 years ago - need to grab a new copy and re-read it. |thumb

Read?
When I was at the Presidio of Monterey I read Hesse's Demian in German, twice. I have no idea what that book is about. |

Grok. What a word. And, Jubal. I wanted to bed that old geezer. |
I fuckin loved that book, big time. I think I read it first when I was 11 years old. I devoured anything by Heinlein that I could find at that age.
As an adult reader I find RAH kind of silly- science fiction writing has evolved a lot since his day. But, while I rarely read his stuff anymore, or re-read I should say, he will always have a special place in my thoughts. It's no exageration to say that Stranger may have influenced me religiously more than any other book I've read. I read it at exactly the right time for it to imprint me with a deep sense of libertarian spirituality. Crazy thing to say about a science fiction book, but there it is. |

No shit...I was at Fort Ord and a neighborhood friend was at the Presidio learning Russian. Until the army found out he smoked weed. |
Between that and the little red book they were the top "had-to" read stories back in the 60s - we had whole church movements based on that book that just knew in the future there would be so much govt intervention as to really change our way of thinking - hey it really came to pass didnt it |satan|
It was funny that when we discussing the book (not in school - they wouldnt have allowed it back then) the major differences that came to light between the people that got it and those that didnt - sorta like the old animal farm story - some people still think that was just a story about animals on a farm LOL - (linkster goes off singing Beasts of England to himself) |pink |
