Heads Up About Canadian Hosts

This may be stating the obvious but ...

Many non-US residents are thinking about changing hosts to someone not based in the US. If you go that route and are considering a Canadian host, check first to see if their data centre (not center LOL) is actually located in Canada. An e-mail or whois.sc query will usually straighten this out. A lot of hosts in Canada simply rebrand an American product as their own. Getting a Canadian company does not guarantee you a Canadian host. Caveat emptor!

Nice tip.. thanks for sharing.

Kinda like how American beer in Canada is really just Canadian beer rebranded under an American brandname. I'm more worried about them switching it with real American beer someday!

I keed. I keed.

LMFAO

I wasn't going to post because I shouldn't be posting as much (should be working more, and I am...now that I post less) ...but I couldn't resist laughing publicly at this post of ADK's... hahaha...

Perfect... that made my night.

Agent 2005-06-14 12:49 AM

Glad you liked it.

I almost didn't hit the Post button thinking the American-Canadian beer expose comment would be too controversial and could get me exiled from the board :D

Drinking a Molson Golden at the moment. But don't forget, more Bud is sold on the planet then any other beer. Not that it makes it a good beer.. just shows how many simple minded people there are..

I used to drink Budweiser (brewed by Labatt's ;) ). One Friday night at a local bar I bought a bottle of Bud and two drunk guys across from me gave me a disapproving look. I said 'Hey, I gotta work in the morning' (cause its watered down piss beer). One of them said 'Yeah, so do we and we've been drunk since thursday!'.

sorry art, I didn't mean to turn this thread into a beer thread.

Hey if a couple of Canadians get together to talk and it doesn't turn into a beer thread, then it's time to worry eh?

any "real" candadian hosts around on this board?

Greenguy 2005-06-14 09:04 AM

Not that it'd mean anything, since odds are you'd probably still live in the US, but have fun pumping money into the Canadian economy :)

Just a little funny for ya:

After the North American Beer Festival, all the brewery presidents decided to go out for a beer.

The guy from Corona sits down and says, "Hey, Senor, I would like the world's best beer, a Corona."

The bartender dusts off a bottle from the shelf and gives it to
him.

The guy from Budweiser says, "I'd like the best beer in the world. Give me The King Of Beers, a Budweiser."

The bartender gives him one.

The guy from Coors says, "I'd like the only beer made with Rocky Mountain spring water. Give me a Coors."

He gets it.

The guy from Molson sits down and says, "Give me a Coke."

The bartender is a little taken aback, but gives him what he ordered.

The other brewery presidents look over at him and ask, "Why aren't you drinking a Molson's?"

The Molson president replies, "Well, I figured if you guys weren't drinking beer, neither would I."

I personally prefer Corona with a slice of lime, but I digress...

Why would anyone move to a Canadian host? To what end? What's the reasoning?

Just passing through this thread reminding everyone that you should only be drinking Guinness.

Canadian hosts...I had one, main office was in Canada, their servers were in a datacenter in NY, lol...too bad they sucked :D

Xeno 2005-06-14 01:55 PM

I think I remember seeing this in another forum (I won't say which one though...hehe)...anyways, as I replied in that one, If the Canadian host provider has their business "in Canada" but datacenters in the States or elsewhere, this is not an issue. If the business address is in Canada, you are pretty much ok. Many if not most Web host companies will have datacenters around the world for backups, extra load, and any other issues for a safety net they have in place. Datacenters are very large and very costly to run which is why many web hosts setup and share datacenters in a variety of locations. You won't find them in every town or city...just too complicated and costly for many.

One thing to keep in mind too is that most web hosts out there require special servers for the much needed bandwidth and intensity of the types of sites (eg: live streaming)...I would be warey of most reseller hosts though...I put up a "How to find a Web host" tutorial in another forum...perhaps I should add it to this one ;)

As a side note...Canadian beer is the best :) burp!!

Useless 2005-06-14 02:23 PM

From my infinite understanding of things, it does not matter where your servers are. If you are a lowly American, you can host your non-compliant content in Kraplakistan and you'd still be breaking the law. Your home address is what matters, not your host.

On a brighter note, it's all a farce anyway. If it wasn't for my sponsors demanding the removal of their content, I wouldn't be pulling anything. Cowards - every last one of them.

Xeno 2005-06-14 03:03 PM

exactly....it is "your" address, but it is (or could) include the location of your site, even as little as the domain name registration location...although that's pushing it. If someone really wanted to cut all ties, they would move everything outside the states.

It'll be interesting where all this will be in a year from now...especially with the stupid .xxx TLDs (but thats another topic).

It seems that not all sponsors want me to pull their stuff.
Although one has been very clear about it, so what do I do?
Just yank it and let the pages 404?
Do I e-mail all the link list owners?
What?

Thanks for any help

P.S.

A Canadian named Dave is walking down the street with a case of beer under his arm.

His friend Bill stops him and asks, "Hey Dave! Whatcha got that case of beer for?"

"Well, I got it for my wife, you see?" answers Dave.

"Wow," exclaims Bill, "Great trade."
