Blog promotion, where to start?
 

I'm new to blogs (I had a live journal once but it sucked).

How do you promote blogs besides link trades? I'm hoping to get a lot of 'word of mouth' in the future. It's probably gonna be a while before any of the search engines index it.

Are there popular link dumps for these things, directories?

Start out at http://www.adult-matrix.net and dump your blog there. Then follow the links to other blog dumps ( seem to be quite a few ). Every blog I dump gives me about 40-50 uniques per dump site, so worth the effort.

Do as wankmaster suggested, but link lists and link directories are also part of it...providing they have a Blog category (as we do). Search engines will pick up on yours...so no worries. You can submit it manually if you wish, but usually when you begin to setup a network of links between blogs and other sources, sooner or later you will get indexed.

For word of mouth...this is obviously always great to have. Some ideas are, placing your blog name and link in your forum signiature so each time you participate in a forum (any forum), people will see it. If your blog offers a good source of information, articles are good to get done on you. Site reviewers (and even blog reviewers) help as well when they mention great things about your site. Talking to people you know (offline) is another....these are just a few methods of many of course....

1) Feed aggregators
2) link swaps
3) trackbacks and commenting (Legitmate, not spamming)
4) blog directories link sites and such
5) purchased traffic to build a bookmarking base
6) fed from your own feeder sites ;)

Thanks for the info. I just updated my blog today. Fucking 2257 made me take a break from adult so I've been getting my shit in order these past few days.

Thats for the tips everyone, would be great if someone could list some link lists they have found that have blog categories? or that accept blog into thier normal categories?

We do have it.

Try going to feedburner.com and make a headline animator that you can use as your signature in forums or even your emails. It updates automatically everytime you post in your blog so people can see the title of your entry and it looks really cool so more people will be enticed to click on it.

You should also send a ping to services like pingomatic.com to inform others that you have updatged your content.

Remember to make good categories for your blog. Technorati will pick them up and use them automatically. You will get some technorati hits then with no effort.

Technorati traffic isn't a lot, but it's a nice concept and I can see it someday being the google of blogs.
