Is it me or my host?

Could someone check the movies on this page and let me know if they load slowly? I suspect it's my host, but could also be my connection. Thanks!

Useless 2005-09-02 01:05 PM

Even the page loaded slowly for me. So it's either your host or were both on bad connections.

Cleo 2005-09-02 01:07 PM

Movie loaded but took a long time and after about a minute it still was not fully loaded. I'm on a 6 mbps connection.

dirtyjumbo 2005-09-02 01:18 PM

I'm in Belgium on DSL, it does load kind of slow..

Surfn 2005-09-02 01:19 PM

The page loaded ok, but the clips took a while here.

Lemmy 2005-09-02 01:27 PM

OK thanks guys! I think it's about time I started thinking about going dedicated. That site would probably have been declined most places, so I'll put it up on another account I have. I'm getting tired of things being really zippy one moment, and the next it's like everything is frozen in time. :(

Halfdeck 2005-09-02 02:10 PM

The page loaded slowish for me, and the movie is taking forever to load (still waiting).

quest 2005-09-02 02:17 PM

Same here Lemmy, in Michigan..

Slow loading page....
movies at about
16 KB/Sec on Cable :(

That's more like it.

That link is nice and fast. Movies started playing instantly when I clicked on them. :)

Looks like someone did a quick host change. ;)

Yup! I have accounts with two different hosts and it's a balancing act to try and spread my sites between them to maximize my bandwith. More so when one occasionally sucks bigtime and support at the other is sketchy at best.

Dedicated becomes more and more tempting, but then there's a whole shitload of new stuff to learn, not to mention the move (scary, with databases, scripts and all that stuff I don't understand).

To all you newbies out there (or at least those of you who are even more newbies than I am): When they say there's a steep learning curve to this business it's only a partial truth; it's actually a never ending learning curve!

Managed dedicated isn't scary. Unmanaged is. I'm pretty sure that my dedicated box would still be alive today if I would have paid for an outside server management company. If you are on a managed box, it's just like having a pain free virtual account, except you don't have to worry about other webmasters on your server pushing scripts that will demand all of the server's resources. Most hosts really oversell their virtual accounts. I think it's that overselling that creates much of the problmes for virtual users.

Cleo 2005-09-02 04:35 PM

Yeah I always get managed hosting. I've got enough things to do without trying to worry about keeping my server running properly. Anyway I know what I'm good at and digging into the guts of *nix is not one of them.

I'm on the same host as UW and this board BTW. :)

Just upgrade to dedeicated at your presnet host and there should be no problems with DB's and scripts at all. |thumb

On servers I don't own I pay for managed. I don't have time to waste playing with something someone else can fix for less than my time is worth.
