Hey DirecTV Subscribers!

Looks like you'll be able to enjoy Opie & Anthony with me :D

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - XM Satellite Radio has struck a deal that will give DirecTV subscribers free access to about half of its subscription radio channels by mid-November, the companies said Thursday.

News of XM's partnership with DirecTV came the same day rival Sirius Satellite Radio launched two channels dedicated to Howard Stern's scheduled January arrival.

Despite Sirius having hyped the channels, dubbed Howard Stern Channel and Howard Stern II, they contained no audio content Thursday, just a punctuation-challenged scroll that read: "We're building toward Howard's."

"Keep listening. It's going to get good," said a Sirius spokesman, promising Stern-related programing on the channels sometime before the shock-jock's arrival.

As for XM, it will give DirecTV subscribers 50-70 channels depending on which satellite television package they subscribe to. While the offering is mostly music, it also includes children's programing and the talk channels that feature Major League Baseball and shock-jocks Opie and Anthony.

The offering about doubles the number of audio-only channels featured on DirecTV.

XM chief executive Hugh Panero said this week that the company passed the 5 million-subscriber milestone earlier than expected, and that it was on track for 20 million by 2010.

Smaller competitor Sirius, which last year partnered with EchoStar Communications, giving access to about half its channels to DISH satellite TV subscribers, had recently surpassed 2 million subs and will have 3 million by year's end.

And NO - Cleo and I don't live together!

Cleo 2005-09-30 08:17 AM

Kewl :)

I wonder if I will be able to set the Tivo to record satellite radio?

Greenguy 2005-09-30 09:02 AM

You should be able to - I know my TiVo will record the cable music channels.

cockNballs 2005-09-30 01:45 PM

cool

I can get o and a now?

Torn Rose 2005-09-30 01:46 PM

cockNballs 2005-09-30 06:36 PM

Bob and Tom are pretty good too

Jim 2005-10-01 07:56 AM

That is the really weird thing about all this - DirecTV & Fox are in bed together & Fox is in bed with Sirius, so for DirectTV to move to XM (current music channels are Sirius) is IMHO a very stong indication XM is better than Sirius. Plus XM has 5 million subscrfibers & Sirus has 2 or so.

Also note that the Dish page does not mention Stern at all - just that they have the Sirus music channels :D

My neighbor has Dish, DirecTV, Comcast cable, along with all the premium channels, and his dish is this really big oval one that also gets south American program for one of his Brazilian rent-a-girls, plus TiVo HiDefinition boxes. Funny thing is that when I'm over there I still can't usually find anything good on. He does also have this huge rack mounted RAID that has a glowing blue box in each room where you can choose from all the movies he has RIP to it after renting them but mostly all he has is B grade horror movies and porn.

It's nice to know that my used TV and minimum DirecTV package sucks as much as his programing does at a fraction of the price.

That would be because you are looking at the current lineup. There are still 3 months before he moves.

Jim 2005-10-01 11:11 AM

Not that I really care. I don't like either of them but...I will enjoy the extra HDTV channels.

Jim 2005-10-01 11:11 AM

Now if Bob and Tom would move to satellite, that would be good.

I wonder how much that will jump when Stern moves? XM with Opie and Andy have seemed to peak in subscriber-ship with XM.

3.2 million in February
4.4 million in July
5.0 million in September
Projected 6.0 million by January

Plus throw in there that the 14 million people that have DirectTV will also have access to O & A & you're talking 20 million potential listners by Jan.

Yeah, it's peaked :D

And I will bet you $100 that you will not hear Stern on the Dish Network channels.

Greenguy 2005-11-15 09:01 AM

XM started today on Direct TV - I think Opie & Anthony are on 879 (even though the line up they have online doesn't list them)

Cleo 2005-11-15 09:41 AM

Ok, I finally ran a cable from my TiVo to my stereo to checkout what is offered.

Not into talk radio or sports, but I do see there is a trance channel and a few others that seem interesting. :)

I think I still prefer internet radio via iTunes but it is nice to have other choices too.

I just finished downloading the new Madonna non-stop 56:32 mix so will be listening to that today.

Yep - can hear them - Now if they would just get something good like Johnboy and Billy - at least they have Hank's Place
