WordPress and Comment Spam

How well does WordPress handle comment spam?

After having just deleted over 1200 comment spam's in a 24 hour period, all from different IP's, it's time to look at some other blogging options.

BTW The Walrus will donate his left nut to either science or someone who would like a third nut if they can tell him who the cock-sucker is that goes spamming blogs under party poker! If I can ever find this ass-hole, he'll be taking a big hard one up his ass!

Walrus,
I'm not 100% sure on this since I just started using wordpress myself. In the admin area under options/discussion, you can hold a comment in the queue if it contains more than "?" links. When ? is a value you set. There are other options you can set there to slow down or stop the spamming. You can also check the wordpress codex for more information. http://codex.wordpress.org/Working_w...g_Comment_Spam

Thanks for the info, it is something to think about. With 3 spam keywords, I could eliminate about 99% of the comment spam coming in.

I already moderate all comments with links but Bblog really doesn't have a good way to delete them from the queue. You've got to check a check box on each comment individually, no mass check so you can imagine how long it took to simply clean this up and the fact that I probably have the same thing to do again tomorrow.

wow - that sucks...there's a plugin that I of course cant find now that I heard was pretty good...ill see if I can come across it again

It's easy to mass delete comments in WP. There's also a buil-in blacklist function that automatically nukes a comment if it contains words from a list defined by you.

You can also contact the party poker affiliate program people, and make a major stink. It might not get you anything, but you can yell and bitch for a bit.

You can also 1X1 img tag his affiliate code into your most active pages... Sooner or later, PP will disable his account for the bullshit factor.

This afternoon the spam totally disappeared so contacting party poker must have done some good! |bananna|

gobgook2 2005-11-05 10:00 PM

good to hear you got it resolved!

The problem with blacklist filters is, in a matter of hours, the spammers will start playing the same games they're playing on email spam:

vi@gr@ instead of viagra
c1al1s instead of cialis

keyword filters don't work for long, very short term fix :(

I require all commments to have to come from members only. The spam doesnt get thru, and my blogs have been open of almost 7 months. So far so good
