Tracking referrers?

Hi Guys,
I am trying to finally get back to submitting freesites to LLs, and after I read some older topics, I was surprised to see that the counters are banned. (yep I've been away for a looong time :D )
Some of you mentioned that you use your own javascripts which do not produce anything visible on the page, but they provide good unique/referrer stats for each page, and they're compliant with LL's rules.
Would someone please give me an update? :)
AWstats? webalizer? X3?
and how to setup those things?
I want to organize everything thoroughly from the start and keep the on-the-fly changes on their minimum. Help really appreciated |waves|

I imagine if I was worried about counting the hits - I'd use a server side script.

Javascript = browser = inaccurate

You can probably find free ones all day long on the internet.

The only hits I look at personally are the hits to my sponsors :D

Use php or server based counters.

For visits to my free sites I just use the server stats. Webalizer on one server and awstats on the other I think.

I like awstats(more info), for small projects I use cnstats (php include counter with powerful system of filters)

Awstats is best, and you can use the filter function to filter out urls so you can see more clearly exactly how many hits to each freesite.

Awstats is free and included by most hosts, if your host does not have it ask them for it.

Some LLs dont accept javascript at all so its best not to use javascript for tracking stats.

AWSTATS unfortunately very difficult for server and webalizer is not enough :(

Does anybody know anything about these scripts?

Awstats is more than enough if you know what you're doing.
