US 25% "sin" tax on internet porn

WASHINGTON(AP)- Senator Tom Carper is calling for a tax on all Internet pornography.

The Delaware Democrat is proposing a 25 percent tax on the purchase of pornographic material online.

The collected tax money would go to a fund to help police prosecute online child pornographers.

The provision is part of the Internet Safety and Child Protection Act.

In addition to the fund, the bill would require online pornographers to use age-verification software to block children's access.

Carper says the bill will keep kids away from X-rated material.

If the US ever did implement a 25% sin tax on porn - how do you think that will effect our buisness?

Are paysite prices going to be lower? Are US surfers going to be rediect to a different join page or what?

Just shooting from the hip here....

Lots of things could happen, including us being able to tell the government to fuck off because now they're getting an even bigger cut (we all pay taxes after all, so they're already getting the same cut of online porn that they get of everyone else's income).

Paysites might or might not charge more...I think the first thing to get hit would probably be affiliate payouts before the surfers got the short end of the stick. Then again, a nice big "this site cost 25% less before you fuckers elected a Texan retard" might help public relations.

In the end, it couldn't just be a tax on "online" pornography, it would have to be a tax on all porn. Then you have to have someone deciding what is porn and what is art. But before any of that would matter you'd have several years of battle in the courts before any tax like that could be enforced. Anyone had their 2257 docs inspected yet? Case in point.

This is yet another right wing propaganda campaign that will accomplish nothing but pissing off everyone that doesn't jerk off to the Bible.

Ain't gonna happen any time soon. Italy tries to bite on this pie too - we'll hav to see how it works out. Even if they go with this tax it's ain't gonna be 25%

25% tax on porn would be one more reason for companies to move offshore, and for purchases to be made in another country (tax exempt). This isn't a tax on porn, it is another sideways attempt to push people out of business.

If the US decides to charge 25% of porn then there will be less companies operating in the US.

PERIOD

Linkster 2005-12-15 11:43 PM

I totally disagree - there would be more companies operating out of the US - legitimize anything and they will come :)
The US will never let a bill like that go through - its been tried at least 3 times this year already and hundreds of times before - just another congressman trying to trump their own hand for 2006 elections - it will be gone in another 2 months when congress gets back

Taxing The First Amendment and legitamizing porn. OK, it's illegal and would really piss of the far right.

This is a old subject, want to say like Aug.05 but it was squashed by the religious right wingers believe it or not!

There reason was that by taxing it, it would make it legit or acceptable.

I still fail to see where it was "squashed" by anybody.

As far as I know this is still a active threat.

Dig something up on that.

Greenguy 2005-12-16 05:11 PM

We don't sell pornographic material, we sell access to it :D

Linkster 2005-12-16 05:42 PM

These are two different bills - the one from Jul/August is the House of Representatives version, the one reported in this post thread is the Senate version that was just introduced a few days ago - so yes they are two different news items - just the same thing being done from two different angles of congress - and I dont see any threat as these come up every year and get shut down by the conservatives every year

Surfn 2005-12-16 05:46 PM

Same song different singer :D
