Javascript links
What is your experience with javascript links? Do you use them? Are they "worth" anything and if yes, which js code do you use for your SEOd pages?
|
What are javascript links?
|
I think they are arguably more trouble to use than they are worth for the _probably_ very small advantage they provide. And they won't work with people using secure browsers, I believe.
Now, rel="nofollow" might be more useful. And, considering the rumors flying around about the new google database, rel="nofollow" might become way more popular soon. Not that rumors are to be taken too seriously. |
Thanks Bill, have you used rel="nofollow" on your own sites already? I've read somewhere at seochat that it might cause problems with the google bot and that sites might get banned?

Bill is right on the money with the js links. Google claims they can read them now anyways so it's a lot of work for nothing. I've been using php redirects on my other search engine sites with no ill effects so far. :D |
Javascript links can be done a couple of ways, they are snippets of code that use javascript commands to launch a sponsor url. Typically they are onclick eventhandlers.
The purpose is to try to make the sponsor link invisible to the spider and conserve the pr of the page. Jeka, when the rel="nofollow" command first started to be promoted by google, it was described as being for blogs, there was a lack of knowledge about how it was to be used so you heard a lot of warnings against it. But, various google reps have been mentioning it more frequently, usually in connection to 'paid links', as a way to avoid "voting" for the paid link. Since these reps have been pretty much officially promoting it, it is probably safe to use. But, you should study it a bit for yourself, and make your own decision. Is it any real advantage? That's hard to say. Again, you have to decide for yourself. Do you want to "vote" for your sponsor? Or not? I think we'll probably be hearing a lot more about this question soon, if the rumors have any truth to them at all. |
Ooops, forgot your question Jeka. Yes, I've used it. I don't see any sign that it either hurts or helps. However, there is a small emitional satisfaction in knowing I'm probably not passing on pr to the sponsor.

I send everything through PHP redirects to sponsors. Hint: Might want to add a default code in case somebody calls it directly. |
