what image size should I use?

Hi, can you please advice me on size of the images. I'm about to submit to all review sites and I want to present my site as best I can.
At the moment I have images 400x600 pixels,
but I have been checking other sites and lots of them have somewhere around 795x518.
Should I redo them into bigger size? That would be around 1200 images, which is not that bad, but more is coming.
Please tell me, because I really dont know if it is woth redoing.
Thank you
Marketa

600 on the long side with a compression of between 30-60k is good :)

795x518 is a really odd size (4:3 ratio is the norm as far as I know)

It really all depends on the rules of the sites you're submitting to.

Are you submitting a free site or a paysite? If you're submitting a paysite to review sites, 600 px on the long side will put you near the bottom rung of the ladder.

Blowing up pic resolution is generally a bad idea.

Even for galleries or free sites the pics should be bigger than 600. I'd say 700 long if you can. And when I can keep the file size reasonable I go to 800 long. Bigger images surfers like and so do the reviewers in the TGP game. But no bigger than 800.

If it is a paysite they should be 1024 or 800 at the smallest!!!

That's exactly what I do, my freesites images are 700 long and galleries 800 long unless I can't keep file sizes under 90-100kb.

ok, so here's my question - how much compression is too much? I can tell if they start to look really crappy, but how much of a percentage do you leave for compression before you know you just have to cut 'em down more?

I'm just asking because I know some reviewers are sticklers for quality but to be honest, sometimes I see sites that have been rejected for this (not mine lol I don't think) and I can't see that the pics are that bad.

My rules still say 500 but I've been thinking of changing that.

600 is really about as small as they should be now with the size of monitors these days and even that looks pretty small.

As far as compression whatever you can get away with without causing artifacts to start showing up.

I do wish png was an accepted format.

I would recomend to have a closer look into your stats and see how many percentages of your surfers are comming with which screen resolution. Then you probably will have an good idea what size of pics you can offer. Personally I wouldn't move below 1024 today and I even think 1600 pixel would be perfect

What makes you thinking it isn't an accepted format?
